Tub tape or glue?

Postby Jim B » Sun Feb 25, 2007 7:42 pm

At the risk of starting the nerdyish ever post...

Any thoughts before I mess up my brand new rim?

Tape is far simpler and I would go for it on anything apart from track wheels (where the old folklore is that you must put glue on).

Simple to put on:

1. Take tub and stretch it a bit. Stand on it and pull if you're doing it on a nice clean floor (not recommended on your garage floor though :? ).

2. Put tub onto rim (without any tape) fully inflate and leave for 24 hours.

3. Remove tub. Apply tape to rim. Remove a small section of backing so it's hanging over the rim.

4. Refit tub.

5. Lift tub by valve where you have left backing hanging out. Insert wooden pencil (don't use your best pencil as it can get a bit battered  ) then using pencil to lift tub as you go round remove backing, centering tub in rim as you go round.

6. Have a final check to make sure tub is centred. You can usually sort out any problems by lifting and twisting the tub.

7. Stick backing paper in bin. No need to wash hands, wash glue drips off rim, tub, kitchen table, kitchen floor etc.

Excellent guide Rich, can I trouble you for another?

I have a couple of wheels I've picked up which already have tubs on, they are however a bit worn/cut etc. In short I want to replace them.

They have been glued on though, what is the best way to remove all the glue from the rims and leave them ready for tape? (both alloy so no carbon rim concerns).

Thank you very much, grovel, grovel. :D

You can often get away without taking the old glue off but if you do want to clean up the rim I would use white spirit which should get most glues off (and has a nice solvent whiff  )

Almost as long as you can stand around waiting for Dan Benson to change a tube

Glue everytime. Bring it round if you want it done.

For new rims you'll need to clean the rims first, best to use acetone.

Thanks for the offer David, my Dad's pre-clincher vintage so I should be able to twist his arm for help. His was obviously a pre tape era so I've no idea how good it is. Also didn't know if cleaning/fitting solutions had advanced in the last 40-50 years  .

I use glue too.

I mean "use" in a tub-sticking onto wheels way, not a sniffing in the park way

Used glue in the early days on the road bike but changed to tape when it arrived on the scene. NEVER had a tub roll off. However for the track which is where I did most of my racing, ALWAYS used glue.
Have used tape on my current TT bike with carbon rims, and there's no way it will roll off.

Cheers Rich. Tape certainly sounds easiest which was my initial feeling and also what I'd used years ago.

This wheel is going to be used for testing so hardly going to be really stretched with a lot of crit style cornering or rim heating braking.

Dave, any reasons why glue everytime?

Changing tubs isn't so messy and feel it's more secure, only a personal view.

Followed your guide to the letter Mr. Viney. Excellent, works an absolute treat, can't believe how easy it was. Tubs firmly attached and nicely centered, I see what you mean about not using your favourite pencil though. 8)
Went for tape David for convenience, only going to use for TTs so mostly upright (hopefully) riding. I think I'd use glue for security if using for RR but no Zipps for me.

Cheers,

Andrew.
