ive got 500 pounds to blow on wheels

Postby Stu Merckx Man » Tue Feb 05, 2008 5:03 pm

ive been given a gift of 500 pounds by an elderly relative :o :D

ive decided to spend it on wheels (though any other ideas are welcome).

so first off, does anyone have carbon wheels they dont want anymore, i can put up more money if 500 wont cut it, though not too much!, for campag?

i have found these http://www.gbcycles.co.uk/eshop.asp?wci ... O+WHEELSET are they any good? anyone had experience of them?

how would they compare to higher end metal wheels like campagnolo eurus?

As pretty as they are Stu, one of my biggest regrets last year was spending so much money on the Zipps. Thus I wouldn't reccomend it!

If you definately want to spend the money on an actual bike component, rather than a quality holiday or something. I would reccomend getting a power meter.

I've Pm'd you.

Get some Neutrons. You'll still have enough left from your £500 to put some tires on them.

Save money on power meters by making up some numbers and posting them under 'Training'. Nobody will know  .

i think i was a bit hasty in charging in for a new pair of wheels, the ones ive got at the moment are fine really, zondas. hopfully ill get more speed out of cleverer training than by some slightly better wheels.

oh no they're all getting power meters ... :?

for info's sake, Butlers are doing the old Dura Ace alloy clinchers - same I've had for 2.5 years without a single problem - for £300

Don't get the Dalkiia wheels Stu. The bloke in GBs (Scottish ex-pro with the very dry sense of humour, prefers to have a chat with you to actually serving people  ) said they were crap. He said that because they were clinchers not tubs, and with such a deep rim, it took four of them to wrestle the tyres on. He also said the build quality was pretty poor. To paraphrase him "if you want to pose fine, otherwise don't touch them."

If you want deep rims then the Planet X are probably best bet in that price, although if you're hammering around Surrey's pot holed roads in SL & SERRL races then I don't know how long they'd last, good for TTs though.

Campag Euros would be good, and strong and a logical step up from your Zondas, or you could go for Campag Nuetrons. Great wheels, good for climbing, and light so accelerate quickly.

I'm sure you know I'm not a powertap man but ignoring my prejudice I'd make sure you'd definitely use it to train and get any proper benefit from it. If you're not going to use it to it's max and just have a lot of graphs and some nice numbers then you'd get much more VFM from wheels, which you certainly will use. Powertaps may be the new must have toy in the club but you still kick their arses each week without one.

Please, not another bloody powertap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course the best thing (to do with cycling Sean  ) you could get is a fixed wheel bike. £500 for a great winter bike and you can do some track racing.

Those wheels are probably gonna be on the heavy side, too.

Personally I'd go for these: http://www.bikesoul.com/s52.html

hmm it is a tricky one.

i wont be getting those Dalkiia wheels- cheers for getting me out of that one andrew!

im going to make a few inquiries into the power tap and training, see how benificial it could be. depending on this i may come back to wheels.

Hmmmm....seriously tho.

I'd go with Sean's idea, closely followed by Huw's (fell @ the last) then failing that do what Mike suggests re: training forum and made up stuff. That way you can blow the £500 on sweets, think of the jaw training benefits you could get if you bought a lorry load of froot salad chews.......(drifting into a sugary dream)

Next!

ill aslo have about ₤250 left over then which could get me a wheel upgrade if i chip in some more money i guess.

Here's the turbo trainer, best on the market IMHO for realistic wattage and ride realism.

Don't buy a powermeter for the road there too expensive and you can really structure your power training on the turbo with no limiting factors.
