100 miles - on rollers

Postby mrP(Boonen)VT » Fri Mar 07, 2008 2:37 pm

OK, so in the cold light of day, it doesn't seem like such a good idea  , but I am going to cover 100 miles on the rollers at work for Sport Relief on Friday.

As the room is booked, I only have 4 hours to do it in

Any sponsors welcome........

I'll stick 10 quid in the pot for it, beat 2hrs for 50 on the way and I'll double it - no pressure.

How are you doing it, just use the normal bike set up and let the spinning front wheel clock up the miles?

Thats gonna be a walk in the park right? I mean I can sit on my rollers and ride at 25-30mph at only around 140-150bpm (70-75%). No problem! The hard part will be the keeping concentration!

I expect Paul will be using proper rollers Adam, not those that Rapha use with a clamp for the front wheel. Riding for 4 hours on those and keeping it smooth and steady will be a task in itself, let alone covering a specific distance.

Using fixed Paul, 106" .

I have 'proper' rollers Andrew, ask John L, they were his after after all. And yes, like I said in my previous post surely the hard part is just riding the rollers for that amount of time, not the 'distance covered'...

 Didn't even know you had a set Adam.
I think the constant pedaling and rhythm will be the toughest part, aside from the gear mentioned my question about riding fixed was a serious one.

If you do have a set then where were you when we got the rollers out at the club room to demonstrate your skill? We could have had a good match between you and Steve.

Now hang on Andrew, I didn't claim to have any skill regarding riding on the rollers! Oh no, far from it! The only time your likely to see me use them is placed tentatively close to may car to warm up for a race! And even then, your unlikely to see my let go of my car tooooooo often!

Likewise you'll never see me ride a 100 miles on them either! Oh no.

But I'm sure the Guru posseses excellent roller riding skills...

You had people holding you on the rollers Adam so you'd have been fine :D , although George's "style" on the rollers did mean that it had to be handed over to the stronger gents to try and hold him still  .

Paul has about 68 years experience on the rollers so he's very good on them. At the club evening he was demonstrating bringing the bike down to an almost standstill before winding up again, no hands, and one legged pedaling on them among other tricks. Mind you Marco has a picture somewhere on the website of when things don't go to plan and you end up grounded  .

Not of me he hasn't.

Yes I will be riding fixed, but my rollers are a bit tough to stick to 106" so will gear down to the 90's.

Adam, the entire 100 miles will be unheld, not even a table or chair nearby. True enough the heart rate may not get too high at that moderate pace, but remember it takes a lot of concentration just to stay upright.
