New kettle needed - any recommendations?

Crisis at Ingram Towers! Mrs I decided to de-scale the kettle and dissolved the little plastic window through which you could see how full it was. She swears she only used vinegar, but my stash of triple-distilled Calvados has definitely been depleted . Strong stuff!

Anyway, in view of the response to Snoop's new toaster thread, I thought 'There's only one place to investigate the market'. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything I liked on the Comet web-site, so here I am canvassing for opinions. I've seen you all in the cafe on a Saturday morning and know you take your cuppas very seriously.

So, what's it to be - Italian steel, carbon fibre? Watt whatage is best?

Nothing endorsed by 'celebrity' chefs please - especially not the mumsy one, the lithpy one or the plumptious fruity one.

Of course one should never be without a simple Bialetti (sp) espresso stove top - strictly speaking the kettle is for wusses who drink tea and such like.

We were breaking kettles about every six months after we moved to Lahnden (gosh, the water tastes AWFUL down here. All that yucky calcium carbonate. Even after filtering, you still get a scum on the tea. End of rant). When our last electric water heating appliance went wrong about a year ago, I bought one in Tescos for (I think) £4.99 and thought that would make do until we decide which one to get, and the damn thing is still working perfectly

I miss kettles.

USA is a kettle wilderness - notice that if you see one in a Hollywood movie it's in some rich apartment and used to make tea or its a glass jug used on a gas cooker.

So like I said I miss kettles and my drip coffee machine sucks - when we move house in August and actually have a home I'm buying a Cafetierre again if I can find one - Cafetierres are kinda new over here and called 'presses' - really this country is so far behind the rest of civilisation - you would cry if given a US cellphone..
