Who's Gonna Start Road Racing Next season Then?

Strike while the iron is slightly warm they say :D :D So on the strength of your efforts on Saturday (I'm talking B racers mainly) you will all be more than comfortable in a 4th cat and few of you even a 3rd cat race. I don't know all of your names sorry. But put ya name down if you'd consider racing next season and myself, Huw and Paul will come up with a plan for ya. Go on don't be scared you know you wanna

I'm up for racing next season and having a proper go at it :D.

Did a couple of races at Palace this year and raced at Hillingdon once in a 4th cat race because Palace was cancelled. Loved Palace but found Hillingdon so much easier in the 4ths. At Hillingdon spent alot of the time near the front or on the front for the first two thirds of the race then fading in the last final sprint up the hill. First time round Palace I managed two laps, then the second time I managed six before being dropped. I guess my objective next year would be to finish a race at Palace without being dropped. Hillingdon next year would be to take some points.

I didn't make the B race on Saturday as I was late getting to CSS taking my daughter to a swimming lesson. :( I can only speculate on how well I would've done in that race.

I'm keen to try out a few winter series races as a target. I know there's stuff going on at Hog Hill. Hillingdon is convenient for me but I'm not sure what's happening. Cyclocross will be an option too in a few weeks time when I have my Ritchey working again. :D

Any suggestions or advice Toks from you or anyone else for that matter would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not waiting till next season! I'll probably, in fact definately do one of the winter series, either Hillingdon or Hoghill.

don't worry if you get dropped in your first few races, just stick with it and one day you might be as good as Stu.

I would love to be able to do a lot more racing next season than I managed this year i.e. two Palace races plus the interclub time trial. Injury, illness, work commitments and dad duties have all conspired to keep me off the bike(s) for much of the summer, which has been frustrating because I was feeling pretty good back in May, when I placed 3rd in my first ever road race after getting into a successful break with Hal and another fellow at Palace.

As for winter training, I might look into doing a couple of cyclocross races on the MTB; other than that I'll just try to commute to work as often as possible.

could i put my name down - how do we do that?

I would be up for doing a bit of racing so if Toks, Paul or Huw could come up with a plan it would be good.

i worked with a trainer this year to plan a program for my sportives but i would like to try someone different this year so if you do have any suugestions on who would be good to talk to that would be good.

Great stuff Tim, after a fairly gentle October we'll try and generate a plan and drum up more interest in mid to late November. :D

great, is there a plan to do the winter series? if we could get a group together it would be handy for getting to races and training. i have read the posts about how to start racing but i don't really get it, no panic at the moment.

thanks for looking into this for us.

One thing to remember is you may find yourself on your lonesome at the beginning. But if you do bite the bullet and enter events (winter series) we'll give you lots of support especially if you let us know by writing a report :D

If there is interest then I'm sure someone (or two) could do a club room talk one night (October or November before the Winter Series start) to explain what you need - BC membership level, licence, cost, how to enter, what to do on the day, etc, etc. Personally I think if you keep it down to essentials, to get started so as not to clog up brains with too much info to try and take in, then it could be done in about an hour. Possibly make the most of the evening and cover TTs as well to a basic get you started level - i.e. what form you need, how to fill it in, where and when you send it, HQ race day etc.

This might help keep interest going while it's still close to when the ACC RR and President's 10 were. I think you could cover the RR and TTs in about 2 hours (one clubroom session) to a basic level without getting too tied up in the various organisations/race organisers/competitions as that all starts to develop and build of its own accord once the initial toe dipping has started. It's what you need to get and do for the first couple that's key.

My 2p.

Cheers Kieran, I really aspire to be like Stu. I mean the style and grace with which he rolls around at the side of the road with cramp is nothing short of inspirational... :P
