Do you want a "Start Racing" talk?

Postby Andrew G » Wed Sep 24, 2008 8:34 pm

As mentioned in the who's gonna race thread...

Would you like a talk arranged on:

Road Racing - The basics
How do I start? What do I need? Where and when would be a good place to start (circuits/series)? How do I enter? Race day prep and what do I do at HQ?

Time Trialling - The basics
How do I start? What do I need? Where and when would be a good place to start (courses/races)? How do I enter? Race day prep and what do I do at HQ?

Please indicate a yay or nay above and if there is sufficient interest I'll try and sort something out. Due to pilates in the clubroom I'm provisionally suggesting the Half n' Half (I never really need an excuse to go there for a dark but this time I'd go just to be agreeable  ) on say a Thursday in Late October or early November. Would imagine the basics could be covered in 2 hours so would aim to start about 8ish.

Dear Lord Toks of Norf Lahndahn

For the first, and possibly only time, I feel bound to disagree with ye  . I think it would be really cool if we could do both of these together and bang both drums - get a bit of crossover going. Just think - if you could get all those damn testers to see the light - Palace could be all black and yellow. You know it makes sense :D

I don't see the point as the basics of both can be covered in one session and therefore be of use to more people. If someone wants to have a go at both then they only have to go to one talk rather than try to find the free time for two. I'm thinking basics to have a go here, any more than that can easily be picked up from others once you've made that all important first step.

For RR I'm not thinking of great detail here, simply more along the lines of licence needed, how to get it, how to enter a race stuff rather than ins and outs of training/tactics etc.

Why should the two be mutually exclusive anyway, can't people do both?

Judging by the number of questions that repeatedly crop up on what to do, what is needed etc, then yes. If no-one told you when you started Toks would you know about getting a licence, how to enter, how the categories work, where you can race, how to fill in a CTT form (you may need that yourself for a couple of your goals  ), what to do on race day / at HQ, which clubs provide the best post race cakes...............

Not quite sure what you appear to be getting at with this Toks :? .

 If the people need a "start racing talk" then thats what the people should have :D Like everyone else I picked up all the race info from people like Ajay, on the forum and at the BCF site. I'm the last one to be negative but I'm wondering what would a specific race talk give you if it wasn't (a) presented by some known specialist, for example, experienced racer/coach (And if that was the case I wouldn't attend just to hear Sean Yates describe how to fill in a CTT form) or (b )address some particular weakness (e.g. pacing in hilly time trials or improving your sprinting). Surely everything else a beginner requires can can be gleaned from the forum or on the BCF and CTT website. Lets be honest when you ask people why they don't race not knowing how to get a licence doesn't tend to feature in the top ten excuses/reasons.

I'm not saying I'll be gibbering away Toks :D , I will ask if some of the more qualified people would care to do it - If I can get Yates and Hutch then I'll let you know  .

I wasn't planning on a seminar with powerpoint presentation :), more an informal talk and a bit of Q&A with a beer. Yes the info can be gleaned from the forum/web, I just though an evening beer and some helpful info and pointers from those who do it would be of more use to a novice than surfing and trying to interpret the info yourself.

"Start Racing" - as in aimed at those who have done the odd club 10 or the club road race championships the other week and have had their appetite whet for a bit more, or just fancy trying something out to see if it suits them and add some variety to their cycling.

PS. The bread pudding at the Festival 10 last week was very good.
