Unfortunately I'll probably miss the Catford Hillclimb due to family commitments, but should be able to line up for the Bec event. I won't be there anything like an hour beforehand though; in fact I'll be lucky if I have 10 minutes to warm up. It'll be my first time up the hill too.

Shorter the race, longer the warm up.

Don't worry it will be well signposted!
Just don't start too fast, especially this one which is quite shallow at the bottom and where you could be tempted to sprint from the gate. I think a good strategy would be to do it all in the same (low) gear with possibly another one or two bail-out gears for the steepest sections at the top. This way you avoid blowing out early, and looking like a dork once you go past the crowds on the upper sections (there will be no-one one the lower part). But do not be tempted to stomp too hard on the pedals as soon as you see the spectators, as there will be an awful long way to go from there, and the pacing is crucial just like in a 1h TT. I bet the crowds will be roaring doubly when they'll see you coming on a mtb Mike!

But only Catford (which I'll miss) has the MTB prize, so I was thinking I'd probably be on my road bike for this one. Should I ride the MTB anyway, just for the extra cheers?? 8)

I've been a bit quiet recently but just to confirm, this ride is going ahead as planned. 10am from East Croydon taxi rank Sunday morning.

As Sylv says, the aim is not to be struggling like a dork when you hit the crowds. All other considerations are secondary :? .

Is anyone planning on riding out to the Catford and then on to the Bec?

That's the tactic I've adopted  . No-one cares what time I do so I've dawdled at the start and then gone for it once I see the first person round the corner and looked like I'm going okay as I pass the crowds. Sometimes the odd bugger comes further down the hill and catches you out though.

I'll be up for the mountain bike ride from East Croydon and the spectator option for the hill climb sounds good. I'm a relative rookie to the MTB although been road riding for couple of years - I've already managed some over the bars acrobatics just going down the North Downs Way but promise to try and keep my crashes brief tomorrow...

Thanks to everyone who turned up today. After a short spin to Purley we climbed throught the wet woods to Old Coulsdon and then down into the Happy valley. From here it was up onto the North Downs Way and east to the Wall of Death. Quite a few takers today with Mike who rolled in straight away (before he could think to much about it), Joel doing a jump in and Graham dropping in on a rigid MTB with canti brakes to clear the branches for everyone else. From here it was a quick hop, step and jump to the Flint House downhill and a return up beside the paraglide school. We got to the Bec Hill Climb in enough time to have tea and sandwiches before the first riders appeared.

For those who want more of the same, (well, with out the Hill Climb) there will be a ride from Coulsdon South next Saturday leaving at 9.15, returning to Cafe Nero Coulsdon for about 12.30.

I enjoyed myself too...

Was far to tired really, and shouldnt of gone, but i am glad i did!

Was really enjoying the hill climb untill it began to rain, i was fighting the cold and felt really tired/fatigued and the rain just destroyed me, i felt mentally broken!

I left in the heavy rain following Higg to the roundabout but as soon as i saw a sign to croydon i guessed i'd find my way home so sprinted off... was doing 39mph over botley hill on fat knobbly tires with the rain driving into my face... but i warmed up and powered on, i made it home, 10.3 miles from the hill climb in 27 minutes...

Sorry to kinda leave suddenly, but i was in survival mode!

What a shame i didnt have decent waterproofs on!
