Probably because that's what their lawyers tell them to say. If my livelihood was threatened in that way, I'd answer in lawyerese too.
Anyone on trial for anything that brings up past convictions or otherwise would, I am sure, have the remarks struck from the record. but I stand ready to be corrected by any lawyers, barrack-room or otherwise
