I don't ride backwards, but wondered if it would make a difference, and if it did, what else was involved as well as gyroscopic forces.

After a bit of searching though, if seems that if you either exchange the wheels for iceskates, or add a pair of contra-rotating wheels to negate gyroscopic forces, a moving riderless bike will still balance...

Either way, I am fairly sure that the dynamics of a bike with a rider are very different.

You may need to do some tweaking from a bought built up as a bike Paul due to the best compromise build up.
My Giant MTB does what I need of a very occasional chuck it at the trees bike, but since I got it I've swapped the grips to lock-ons, fitted a much shorter stem and cut an inch off either end of the bars. It's now much tighter to ride for me.

Moving the brake levers down seems to have done the trick. Thanks all for your advice.
