Good commuting tyre

Sods law that after posting about Rubinos I got a puncture on Sunday. Mind you it was a whopping great big piece of glass in the tyre.

I think that punctures are more about luck that the tyre that you have got on your bike, although I do think that GP3000s wear out pretty quickly, although I would put anything else on my racing bike as they roll extremely well.

On the subject of the price of tyres etc, if you buy more tyres on probikekit.com the cheaper they become. Therefore, people should club together to get a batchload so that you get an overall lower unit price along with free delivery. I don't need any at the moment, but when I do I will post on here and see if anyone else wants to join me in getting a batch load of contis or michelins etc.

How are you Nick? Hows the leg? More importantly have you got a new bike yet? What sort of thing have you been looking at. Theres been a few good Box Hill club runs, it seems to get a bit easier, but I think there was mention of Whitedown Hill(or something like that) maybe for this saturday which is meant to be pretty steep!
Armadillos should be about 20 quid I think. If I get any more punctures I'll give em a go.

Paul you will love whitedown, a chap of your stature will fly up it along with the rest of the whippets, me? well I get up them, unfortunately I tend to go a funny colour and are prone to bouts of swearing!
At a guess white down is about a 17/18% bump for about 1.5 k- box hill is a relatively flat 4/5%!

I used Ultra Gator skins last winter - then changed to GP3000s in the spring for a trip to the Alps. I've kept them on and they've been fine but as soon as I start getting punctures I'll put the gators back on as they're out of tread now.

Comment about them keeping bits in is true though - they go ages but as soon as they've acquired a piece of glass you need to get it out otherwise you're stuffed when you put a new tube in..

I just bought 2 pairs of Ultra Gatorskins mail order thinking I was buying 2 tyres!

They're not folding so cant really bring them on a club run

Got another puncture yesterday...

All the recent punctures have been caused by little splinters of glass, and I reckon I've narrowed down the source to a small section of cycle path, where there was a lot of broken glass a while ago.

The council did clean it up - at my request - and although it looks ok, I don't think they've got rid of all of it. So I'm gonna head down there with a dustpan and brush some time this weekend and finish the job off.

While on the subject of tyres, I bought a pair of Maxxis Equipe Leggere in September, not cheap at £25 a go but Cycling Plus gave them a really good write-up. I used them to get up Ventoux on a good road suface and thought they were excellent tyres.

However, returning to British roads, I had 6 punctures in 250 miles, all but one caused by tiny stones. I hope by now I can fit a new tube properly, use good quality tubes and I always check for embedded debris when I return from rides Maybe I had a bad batch or bad luck. Maybe I should have returned them to Maxxis with a complaint but after a 20 (dry) mile ride which included 2 stops to mend punctures, they went straight into the bin.

In their annual awards, Cycling Plus have given the Maxxis? their Silver Award but I?ve reverted back to their Gold Award winners, the trusted UltraGatorSkins.

I'll second that. I also use Armadillo All Condition for commuting. 160/250 miles a week. Touch wood, with not a single problem even with short distances off road.
