Folks, the club gives a goodwill gesture of £5 to each helper at events, but only to those whom commit to helping out well in advance. This is done as the club cannot put on events without being sure that the required number of people will turn up to help.

In other words, if you're planning to come and help, sign up now & get £5. :D

Hi George,

I can help. I've not done any marshalling before, but I'll try not to send anyone the wrong way!

George
I am willing to help but am new to this and have no idea where the event is. I can do anything needed as long as somebody shows me the ropes.

Hey Guy's thanks for volunteering :D :D :D

Don't worry about not knowing what to do, you will be allocated a job and all marshals will be briefed of their duties before the event starts at the Horne Park golf club car park.

Please attend a briefing at 6.55pm at the Finish area in Croydon Barnes Lane next to golf course entrance. This will be when you will be allocated your position.

You MUST wear your marshals jacket/tabard at ALL times when assisting the passage of the race.

You MUST have and show a RED FLAG to alert other traffic of the impending arrival of the race.

Your purpose is to WARN other road users of the race. You have NO powers to stop other road users.

Please be polite and request that other road users allow a few seconds for the race to pass. Do not engage in arguments.

Refer any problems to the Commissaire/Organiser. Take as many details as possible e.g. car registration number, time of happening, make, model, colour of car, driver’s name, riders’ number(s) etc.

Hi Saw the request from Jon if you still need any marshall for tomorrow. I am free and fancy an evening ride.
I can get down to circuit during the afternoon.

A few more rambling comments from me with a view to assisting those new to marshalling, so that they know what to expect.

At the marshal meeting prior to the race I suggest you let the organiser know if it's your first time. Novices can usually be placed with someone more experienced.

Tomorrow's race is what's known as a "handicap". This means that rather than all starting at once, the riders are set off in small groups of typically 8 or so riders; the "slower" riders first, and the "best" riders in the last "scratch" group. The groups are set off at typically 1 minute intervals. The faster groups tend to catch the slower groups, often forming a single bunch for the last lap.

There are 3 junctions on the "triangular" Newchapel course where riders effectively turn off the "main" road into a side road. Approaching traffic on both the main road and especially the side road needs to be warned that there's a race coming. The riders are responsible for their own safety, but will tend to enter and exit the corner wide, often briefly using both sides of the road. Consider this point in choosing where to stand when warning oncoming traffic.

You have no legal power to stop traffic, but fortunately few drivers know this, and will kindly stop when you in your fluorescent gilet with your red flag stand in the road. Smile nicely. Usually there's no problem. Should a driver insist on progressing, it would add to the safety of the race by letting the riders know that there's a potential problem arising by loudly shouting "car" so that they know to ease up a bit and really keep to their side of the road.

Thank-you.

I think Lingfield is closest, followed by Horley.
