Much respect for taking the initiative to sort out the town planners.

Right about this being a can of worms.

Lets not take notice of the lame argument that cyclists don't get respect cos they jump red lights. Motorists are peed off that there average speed in big cities is 12mph or something similarly depressing. Of course they get fed up with bikes, but probably cos we overtake them when they are stationary.

They have a go about cyclists about their silly clothes, daft helmets etc.. But you know what, I couldn't give a toss. Just cos some overweight office monkey in a leased car is pissed off that I've just sneaked between the lanes of stationary traffic - good. Bring it on......

I also wear a walkman while I'm cycling - talk about living on the edge!!!!!

Zak Carr got run over and killed but that didn't have anything else to do with red lights. My friend got run over by a drunk driver - no red light on this one either.

Or, if you can't manage that, a Condor bike will do ...

(Quickly ducks behind sofa.)

The issue Marco brings up: temporary solution is as Mr Lombari mentioned. Very sensible. Also the long-term solution with town planners and councillors is excellent. Lord knows with the amount of riders in the Addiscombe we could wield some heavy-duty political clout if so roused.

I've walked my bike to my advantage. At that weird A23 junction near the Oval headed south I inevitably got a red light heading to Angell Town. So I threaded up to the front, hopped off, walked the bike across the island to the right and sat in on the traffic heading towards Peckham from the Oval and turned right from there. Nice 'n legal and saved 30 seconds or more.

More than one way to skin a cat legally!

I have to say as a weekend rider and weekday pedestrian, it does annoy me to have bikes riding through against red lights - when it's across a pedestrian crossing I'm on.

Cars even worse of course, but peds shouldn't have to look out for crossing traffic when they have the green man.

I guess I try to live "do unto other others..."

NB I found setting my bike computer to ignore stops helps with my impatience at red lights!

Red lights

Postby Paul on the Pearson » Sat Dec 17, 2005 9:10 am

On the daily commute, Brixton to Westborne Park most of the time its riders on crappy, clapped out 2 for 99 qiud mountain bikes wearing ill fitting helmets worn at a slightly rackish angle. When they jump the lights I just wait for the lights to change and affect an air of bored nonchalance when I overtake them, as they only ride at about 2 mph this is easy even for me! If they got hit crossing the juntion I'd just cycle round em trying not to get blood and innards on me tyres.
Jumping lights seems pointless. How much time does it actually save.
It gives serious cyclists ( even if you dont personally jump lights) bad publicity.
