Very sad news, Eddie was a true gentleman. Always tried to instil some confidence into me.
I`ll certainly miss him at the races.

He always made me try just that little bit harder.

Very very sad news indeed and such a shock, but we can be thankful that he was with friends right up until the end. I, like others, was chatting to Eddie just minutes before it happened last night and he was as sprightly as ever.

I had been liaising with Eddie about various things to do with the club trophies. Just before Christmas I was at his house and he was showing me various mementos from his racing days including a photo of the ACC team after their 24hour record. His memory of those times was still as sharp as if it was yesterday.

Very sad news indeed, when Stu and I arrived at the clubroom last night after the chaingang Eddie came straight over for a chat, he was such a nice guy, really friendly and cheerful.

He was a mean dart player, I liked the way he threw darts, he just seemed to flick them with his upper arm in such a casual manner.

I remember seeing Eddie at most committee meetings and clubroom nights, and also at road races where he would turn up in his ageing estate Ford (I think it was a Ford).

Last time I saw him was at the AGM and we'd gone to the back of his car to put some of the trophies returned for engraving.

It was incredible to think of all those cycling achievements, 12h and 24h from back in a time when bikes and gear were such less technologically advanced as nowadays.

I'd heard about his ping-pong playing but had never seen him play, shame as I think there is a table hidden somewhere in a cupboard at the clubhouse.

Despite his hard hearing he was always chatty and interested in what we were up to cycling-wise. He had also been very active with organising the club diner in the past years.

I don't know what to say, other than my world seems a slightly darker, sadder and more lonely place today than it did yesterday.

Last night was a real shock. I always found Eddie a friendly and very supportive/encouraging guy.

I don't know him nearly as well as many in the club however I'm as sure as I can be that he'd want us to have a bl00dy good time this Saturday in celebration of his life. There's never a right time to go but at least a whole bunch of us will be together very soon to raise a glass in his honour.

Very sad, but I'm glad there were so many friends with him at the time.

By standing in on the darts team a couple of times recently I've been lucky enough to have a few decent chats with Eddie lately. A great story teller with a fountain of experience to draw from.

I never had the privilege to meet Eddie, but reading about his exploits and his enthusiasm for all things cycling, and the warmth of all these anecdotes & messages makes me realise that he must have been a hell of a cyclist and great character ...
he will live on in your hearts & minds...

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Eddie.

Like many, I first met Eddie down at the clubroom when I first joined the Addiscombe back in 1975. In those early years of my cycling I was lucky enough to spend many hours with Eddie and Pat at their home in Balham. I lived just round the corner from them, and they were always happy to feed me and to talk for hours about their cycling exploits.

If anyone is searching for a role model or inspiration in cycling, you could do a lot worse than look at people like Eddie. Whilst I didn't know him as well as many others, he was always friendly and modest, despite his awesome achievements in long distance events in the 1950s.

Maybe a big turnout in the 12 hour would be a fitting tribute.
