If you definately want to spend the money on an actual bike component, rather than a quality holiday or something. I would reccomend getting a power meter.

Don't buy a powermeter for the road there too expensive and you can really structure your power training on the turbo with no limiting factors.

ive decided to get the turbo george has got, (its a bit cheaper than the link you put up john).

i think an all round power tap is a bit to much money. this way i get one on the turbo and have 270 left over, and if i sell my other turbo, and my other wheels i can probably upgrade to the campag eurus.

hmmm i cant wait. ill be posting up my threshold by this time next week!

I remember John Ibbotson telling me a long time ago now that if there is something that you want to upgrade on your bike then start with the wheels and then the forks.

I suppose it makes sense when you think about the weight of frames and the weight of wheels, you probably can save a lot of weight on wheels, if you are into shedding weight. But also I have really noticed the difference between getting something with a good hub and something that looks fancy and not so good hub (Mavic Kysriums are awful in my opinion).

Therefore, if you decide on wheels, then I am of the opinion that a campag made wheel of some description is where you want to go. The campag Eurus I bought off Richard Viney a couple of years back are fantastic. Hubs are very smooth and wheels have never gone out of true.

Also my Triathlon buddy in EG recently bought a pair of the Campag Neutrons and he is really pleased with them. He got them off Parker International, think they were about £325 or £375, they have bladed spokes, look really good and have a good hub. So if you bought those you would have some change to get yourself a haircut in Toni & Guys and then you may be able to pull a girl without having to pay.

I am tempted by the power meter, but they are sooooo expensive for a few numbers that I just cannot justify it. If you can monitor your speed for the effort and heart rate etc on your turbo trainer at present, then in my opinion you can probably work out a progressive training routine and work out whether you are getting better or not.

Not sure a turbo trainer is a good idea as it will be light in the evenings soon and you wont use it and I'm not convinced on there accuracy as well.

As I said before you can test yourself on my powertap. I reckon you have reached a plateau at the moment so you need to benchmark where you are now and how you can improve.

Dont listen to the anti-training go slow lobby (Andrew) - Powertaps are a valuable tool for a racer but is probably out of your price range though.

I would go for a light pair of wheels on ebay like my Bontrager which are great for acceleration and getting away from the bunch.

The only thing I regret with buying my race wheels is that I can't use them for a lot of the races I ride to, like Palace or Hillingdon, for fear of puncturing the tubulars. There are some carbon aero clinchers now but they are uber expensive.
