I have a large il pompino for sale that has cyclo cross tyres and is set up as a single speed. Never really caught the single speed/fixed gear bug. It hasn't done more then a few hundred miles and is in very good condition. Let me know if you (or anyone else) are interested. Will take £225 for it

Back to topic, I recently bought a cross bike as a 2nd bike for commuting on. Hadn't really planned to but I think I got a bargain. Pinnacle alu frame with carbon seat stays and 105 groupset, £450 at the evans marquee sale thing. Got to say I'm really enjoying commuting on it, very robust and versatile. I can cut across woods and parks jump speed bumps and hammer through pot holes without any fuss. Notice the chunky tyres a little on the road but at least I don't spend any time fretting about it taking a bit of a kicking or getting dirty. And on top of that it makes the posh bike feel extra special when I get on it.

Rob C a trusted seller, I now own one of his many offcasts, the Trek 1200. It was abit unloved when I got it of him, nothing a few hours of tinker time, tender love and care could'nt cure, real minor stuff, a polish and a truing.

I would not of got a second bike, for some unknown reason I did and it was fantastic timing that I did as I had mechanicals on my 'Goodie'.

Would you want and absolute shed and pay peanuts for it or would pride dictate that you got something half decent?

I would go for something half decent. I think you want something that you can fit mudguards on and is relatively heavy in relation to your best bike. I also think you want to get something that is still a pleasure to ride, speed can be sacrificed for a bit of comfort, but think you still need to get a reasonable groupset to get the pleasure of decent changing and also I think it is a false economy buying the cheaper groupsets.

How much money would you spend on it?

Well, I don't think you should expect to get much change from a grand.

What would you expect for the kind of money you'd be spending?

I reckon you can get a good quality steel frame with a middle range groupset and wheels.

How much CAN you spend on a 'second' bike before you end up buying what most people would consider to be a 'first' bike?

Hmmm, most people I work with think the amount that I spent on a saddle was the amount they would buy a bike for. I don't think that 'most' people have much of an idea about how much you can really spend on a bike. I remember one time claiming off an insurance company after I had fallen off my bike. When I told her how much it was worth she asked me what model and engine size I was riding. When I corrected her that I was talking about a push bike she went very quiet, I think she may have fallen off her chair.

If you do a variety of riding then it's fairly easy to spend just as much on a 2nd or 3rd bike as the 1st bike. For example a couple of grand each could quite easily go on a road race bike, time trial bike and mountain bike for starters.
