If you have a compact, the differences between each gear is bigger and would probably be noticeable in the smaller cogs. This may not bother you but would me.

When I got my Pearson built up Guy suggested a compact. It was a bit strange at first going from the big to small ring as its a bit of a drop but you soon get used to it and it also means you dont have to have something on the back the size of a dinner plate, an 11 - 23 seems to have covered most occasions, not being the sprinter type I've found the 23 is enough to get you over most things round these parts even some nasty 25% ers in Devon.
