Dragon Ride - Got out of jail

A Place to idle the day away talking about anything you fancy. Expect to find cycling and non cycling topics inside

Hey Toks your mate is not only a great rider - he's funny too.

On this point: "I guess sportif times are odd anyway, for one I've no idea how much time I spent at traffic lights/avoiding sheep etc."

There did seem to be an awfull lot of red lights and other stops this year - worst for me was the narrow street just after the descent after the steep climb at Cymla. An ambilwlans (that's welsh for ambulance btw) was coming the other way with bells and whistles and stopped both bikes and cars as it picked its way through the narrow street. We were stopped for ages, I feel sorry for whoever the amulance was on its way to save cos they would have been dead by the time it got there!

Red lights are a pain - there's nothing worse than chasing like hell to get on the back of a group - absolutely burrying yourself to get in touch then you go round a bend and they're all stopped at a red light light anyway and you've just gone over your max to get back on :-)

Firstly a big thankyou to Huw for promoting this ride and providing loads of helpful information :D

As a lot of people have mentioned already , everyone was expecting to get completely soaked ,and as I arrived at the start I was worried I didnt have enough layers on and nearly rode back to my B&B for another jacket

As we rolled over the timing mat to the strains of what I imagine the youth of 1930's Germany used to do physical jerks too, the rain stopped and the weather got steadyly better until the sun eventually came out.

For the first hour or so I felt pretty good and the group I was in was moving along at a comfortable pace with plenty of riders taking turns on the front.

I was really enjoying myself

Going up Bwlch the first time was fantastic and we were passing people the whole way, over the other side and the decent was fast and furious with some riders coming past me on the straights and then me passing them on the bends 8) .

I think it was just after I'd passed the point where the route split that things started to get weird. My nether regions started to go numb and the only way I could get the feeling back was to keep getting out of the saddle.

Obviously I couldn't ride the rest of the way standing up so I had to grin and bear it . It was strange cos I kept thinking I had a puncture as the back wheel felt floaty .

Anyone else ever had that :?:

As I came up to Bwlch for the second time I was feeling terrible and had to grind up at about 6mph , my spirits only raised by riders who were in a much worse place than me , one bloke was bent double having a good old puke :(

When I got to the top some people had stopped to put on jackets but I was too knackered and the decent wasn't that cold anyway.

I picked up a couple of people at the bottom and rode for a while in a smallish group and was looking forward to the last 10 miles which loads of people had been saying was "all down hill"

Then the sting in the tail , just as I thought I was coming into the home straight they send you off across miles of bloody scrubland with some cheeky little up's just to finish you off .

Anyway once back onto the main road towards the finish I was joined by Hal and we rode over the welcoming bleep of the timing mat at the finish together.

It was great to see so many ACC's at the finish

I was well pleased to come in under 7 hours . Next time though Huw can you get your Mum to pack an extra sarnie for you as I see you came in 1 second ahead of me

I'd like to add that I thought the organisation was smooth the route was great , the signage unmissable the marshals very helpful and the energy gel in the goody bag at the end very tasty.

See you all at Grenwich

Well done, Apples - excellent report, and an excellent ride. You must be training in the right sort of company

Looked out for you at the start, but didn't see you - what time were you off?

The results are at this site :
http://www.raceahead.net/SearchEvents.aspx

They've split the distances, which helps. They'll sort the rankings shortly. Otherwise there's always copy and paste.

My report is now on the blog. (Hint: scroll down to part 1 first !)

I don't have much to add to the reports except to say that it was an execptional day for me on the bike. I felt the course was easy up until I had to face the Bwlch for the second time, what a drag, all I could do was keep my head down and continue to turn the pedals. The problem with the climb was that you could see the road and riders ahead all the time so you knew the agony would last, so with knees and back aching I was grateful to get over the summit. After that ordeal it was mostly down hill to the finish.

Even though I had only done the short ride it was nice to be the second Addiscombe rider to arrive at the finish and be there to greet the others as they arrived.

The organisation was impressive and all the feed stations on the short ride were well stocked with food and drinks and signage and marshalling were excellent. A great day out and I hope to return next year in better fettle and do the long ride.

Photos to follow.

How do we establish our placings in the general scheme of things? On the Raceahead site, you can only view 500 names at a time, and it gives the impression that exactly 1,000 people rode each long route, unless I'm reading it wrong. For some reason I can't use Excel at work (prob cos I don't do the math  ), which would make things a lot easier. Has anyone figured this out yet?
