Retro pork pies (for those of us of that persuasion) available here ...

Pretty good they are too, with a spoonful of apple and ale chutney. I found an excellent pork pie in Esher a couple of weeks ago too though. Top jelly!

So, for what it's worth, my food for a long ride (4+ hours) is generally something like:

- Pre-ride - porridge with banana, seeds, honey, figs (not all of them - 2 or 3 will do); a light claret. I always put salt in my porridge, not to stop cramp, but because without it tastes like sawdust.
- Energy drink - Power bar orange flavour. Everything else makes me puke.
- Energy bars (for steady nibbling) - Maxim, but I'm quite liking Cliff bars at the moment, especially the mint/choc combo
- Emergency carbs - Power bar vanilla, which also work well on porridge. High 5 are too liquid and end up all over the bike. The one they handed out on the Dragon Ride was just foul though.
- Real food - you can't beat a banana
- Immediately post-ride - milk shake with banana, drinking chocolate and honey
- A bit later - pork pie or pastie; cider
- A lot later - steak, chips, Shiraz

And that, folks, is how to spend 7 hours on a bike without losing weight.
