I'll help if it is something I can bring the children to (the older two can also help if there is something suitable for them to do) and if I can get there by public transport, accesible for a disabled child's buggy, travel with someone else who can help me carry him and the buggy up and down stairs or share a lift with someone else going.

Hi Sarah and thanks for your offer of help, much appreciated. As a nice shiny new member of ACC your willingness to volunteer puts many of our established regulars to shame. Given that this race is out in the sticks somewhere  I'm really not sure how do-able this one will be for you. It takes place after the club run (sort of) and so the majority of helpers will be on two wheels I suspect. If someone is going by car and they can help Sarah get there and back pls post here. There are others that take place closer to home that may prove easier to manage.

Snoop

PS - we are still desperately short of help, got around 30 volunteers (thank you so much to everyone who has stuck their hand up) - need 20 more. I will do another mass email tonite, anyone on this forum who is a club run regular and yet to volunteer - please do so if you can

I would feel bad and walk around with my head lowered if as a new member I did not help out.

I Marky Mark, have not got a clue on what to do when it comes to helping out on a race day.

SO I'M IN AND WOULD LOVE TO OFFER MY HELP :P

:?: I will need some help on the personal level with a few unanswered questions.
This might help all of us new members and might even get you a few more shy ones to offer their help.

1. Do we do the full club run first?
2. What time does the race start and finish?
3. If we start helping after half a club run, what do we have to bring? experience will help on this one.
4. Bring a heavy rucksack with cloths and shoes?
5. Cake?
6. Cuddly toy?
7. Then do we all ride back together after the race to complete the club run?

And finally, who put the ram in the ram-a-lam-a-ding-dong?

Marky Mark P.S i'm still not getting emails either.

Top man.
1= Yes to cafe and then retrace to HQ.

[quote]Helpers for JBS Memorial RR @ Henfold Hill Circuit

Saturday 29 March 2008

Leigh Village Hall booked 12:00pm - 6:00pm

11:00 am Race briefing for helpers at Charlwood Café
12:20 pm Race briefing for helpers at HQ
1.10 pm Signing on closes (reserves catered for)
1:30 pm Race starts
4.45 pm (approx) Race Finishes

3= Yourself :) . It all depends on the weather forecast really. I'd say cleat covers are fine if you don't mind standing in cycling shoes. There is a while between laps (not sure how many miles they are but say between 20-30 mins) and you can normally find somewhere to sit and chat for this - fence, floor etc but again can depend on the weather. You will get colder standing about so a windproof/rain jacket and a hat is a good minimum, the biggest mistake made is not realising how chilly it can be standing by the roadside, particularly after you've been cycling. I think it is due to be a bit windy this weekend too.
4= Personal choice again. I'm going to use my commuting bike as it has a rack and I'll stick panniers on it. I'll need one to carry my camera anyway but it'll also allow me to bring a few light layers of clothes to stay warm/dry. I have SPDs on my mountain bike so will try and switch those over to the commuter so I can wear those shoes which means I won't need to weigh myself down anymore than necessary and still have a flat sole to stand on. But will I go all Nicholas Crane and tie an umbrella to my top tube?
5= A bit of food and a drink is always a good idea. You could take a light bag for your back and get these at the cafe though to save lugging stuff about.
6= If you think it'll help but you'll have a couple of others on your marshal point so you shouldn't need to bring one for the company.
7= Yes just a fairly direct ride back.

Was it Danny?

It all tends to be a pretty social affair, chat at HQ before heading out. Then plenty of chatting between laps. Whilst marshalling shout yourself silly at the Addiscombe riders as they come past. Back to HQ for a cuppa and then head off when ready.

I would er on the side of caution re clothing as it won't be much fun if you start getting cold, and possibly wet, and have no waterproof or spare layer. The route is pretty tree lined so sheltering there is an option between laps too if there is a shower or two.

It's only one CR so I take the view that you can afford to take it easy one week if you have a rucksack or pannier and just enjoy it. I'll certainly be dropping down groups this week with a fully loaded bike.

I'll ask George if I can get a lift in his van, otherwise I'll be driving. Only have a two-dour coupé though, but can probably fit one person at the back and one at the front, with the second back seat folded down to allow space for the bike with the wheels taken out. How small does the buggy fold to Sarah, and where do you need the lift from?

Sorry I did not get any of your emails otherwise I would have responded sooner.

I am available to help.

Do have a car if required.

For my sins also have Assistant Comms Licence.

Let me know if I can help in driving/marshalling.

Best to use my email address john@jcochrane.me.uk as I will be working at a Motor Racing meeting Snetterton on Saturday but do have facility to my emails.

John Cochrane

Ooops...... just realised the race is on Saturday...thought it was Sunday. So I won't be able to help this time.

Mark, we normally do a marshalls' tea run with tea, coffee and cake/sandwiches.

And whatever you do, don't follow the mob - they tend to take a tour of the Surrey Hills to get to the HQ whereas I just go straight up the road. However I do intend to come back from the HQ via Pebblecombe :D

By the way Snoop - I can run the kitchen pretty much on my own if neccessary, maybe one other helper, if you don't get enough marshalls. Just so long as you don't expect me to bring anything but myself - I trust that the supplies side is in hand?

Passport control have granted me an all day visa for this Saturday, so I'm confirmed as able to help.

Whether I'm cycling out (with camelbak full of clothes) or taking the car depends entirely on how my knee feels after a trial ride tomorrow afternoon.

More news to follow.

OK Amy - as usual we're getting a late rush of help so we'll see how we go numbers wise.

Supplies - no idea I'm afraid. Previously my duties have extended only to getting volunteers committed and details to the promoter who has done the rest, I've never even been to a road race before  . I'm on a steep learning curve and stuff is becoming aware to me @ the very last minute. I go away tomorrow so I tried to call Guru Paul this evg to see what else I may have unknowingly/unwittingly forgotten but he's out  . I'm sure we'll get it sorted somehow.

Thanks to the sterling effort that Doug has put in to getting the troops together, I have allocated marshalling positions on a random basis - please feel free to swap around as long as the positions are covered.

The following positions remain unfilled and are desperately needed:

Canteen assistant (2)
Marshal refreshments - someone with a car to take a flask/snacks round to the marshals during the race.
Commissaire scribe - someone to take notes as directed by the commissaire. (may not be required as I have not yet heard from the commissaire) Neutral service car - not specifically required but if anyone would like to step forward Gear check for Juniors - Ensuring that junior riders comply with the gear restriction by measuring out their highest gear Lap Board/Bell - very important Car Park Steward - Important to keep the riff raff out of the hall car park.
Assistant Judges (2) Very important - required to record numbers at the finish Regards Paul

have now been in touch with commissaire - Keith Brooks and he will drive himself, so no car required, and he is happy to take his own notes so no-one required there.

I have now had a volunteer for marshal feeding duties, and 1 for canteen

Still need:

Judges (2)
Junior gear checker
Assistant signing on
Race aids collection
lap board/bell
car park steward

Please let me know ASAP
Thanks

I'll be happy to help with either signing on or as Junior gears nazi/knee protector (delete according to your point of view).

Or, if we are still one short in the kitchen, I can help with canteen duties - if only to prove that I can be trusted around cake :D
