You better be quick, Roy. Coulsdon gunshop was smashed up last night. Dunno if much was nicked but they did have some rather nice looking Lee Enfields in stock.
Keep telling the old man to get one to show the locals in his Spanish village how to drop a boar at half a mile :D

Re. discipline and respect: OK I'm biased because my wife and many of my relatives are teachers, but bear in mind that kids spend a tiny proportion of their time in school. And if kids go into school with the idea that teachers are not to be respected then there's s0d-all that teachers can do to address that. And how many professions are you strongly encouraged not to report it if you are assaulted at work?

This is something that's been brewing for 30 years or more. It can't be sorted out overnight.

[quote="Sean Hogan"][quote="Roy Green"]100% agree with Rob Q's observations about National Service. I'd add that most of my 2 years was good fun too. Also that I did learn to shoot straight, to the degree that I earned a Marksman badge. Could come in useful, with a bit of brushing up, if things continue there downward trend ...

Roy, you're still barred from half the bars in Singapore after your posting here ;-)

Ooo, it weren't 'half fun in Singapore in those far off days, Sean! :) Bit too politically correct there now, from what I hear ...

[quote="Paul H"][quote="Bo-Gilly"]This is about bitter frustrated alienated youth who have no respect whatsoever towards a society which offers them so little opportunity and often treats them with so much contempt. You reap what you sow.

Lets try again,

Bo - Some of these youths go to the same school as my son and have the same opportunities in respect to education. According to my son, they are not interested in learning and spend more time disrupting classes, mugging, bullying and thieving - all of which my son has been a victim of and it is now affecting his education.

There are jobs out there but as Iliya said, you have to make yourself employable and actualy want to work.

If they are alienated, its either their own or as Wayne said their parents fault.

Well bloody said!!

Less than 10,000 votes to go. As Bo said, sometimes you "reap what you sow"

Good article in the Telegraph:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/ ... mpage.html

The last two sentences sum it up quite well:

"And, just for a moment, they weren’t monsters, feral rats or thieving scum. They were stupid kids out too late, who needed a mum like Pauline to bring them to book and a father to take them home."

I see our intrepid PM, on his fleeting visit to our green and pleasant land, has given the Police powers to ask rioters and looters to remove their face-coverings.

"I have also asked the police if they need any other new powers.
Specifically on facemasks, currently they can only remove these in a specific geographical location and for a limited time.
So I can announce today that we are going to give the police the discretion to remove face coverings under any circumstances where there is reasonable suspicion that they are related to criminal activity".

Bravo! David! Bravo! That'll put the wind up 'em!

I thought this was a good read. And no, I don't normally read the Daily Mail.

Cheers

Load of cr*p that article, lets all go back to some mythical past of happy families, full employment, where women and children knew their place, and where child abuse, wife beatings etc was all hidden and not reported, happy families indeed. Especially stupid it that attack on multiculturism, looking around the world most cultures seem to value law and order, family life etc. Looking at who and where the looting took place, to say it has nothing to do with social exclusion, poverty is mad, I didn't see the children in Dulwich, Richmond, our nice bit of forest hill out there? My neighbour's children, both teenagers of a divorced Mum weren't involved. As the American critic, Henry Louis Mencken said:

[quote]"Complex problems have simple, easy to understand, wrong answers.

Have to agree with Marek and Rob. A very good article.
Here's another:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/artic ... ouths.html

The breakdown of family life and what the sneering liberal, tofu-munching, islington guardianistas call "traditional values" is largely to blame. This has been encouraged by successive governments since the 70s.

These rioters and looters aren't "poor" in the true sense of the word. Go to any sink estate and count the number of sky dishes on the walls.

For balance there's the usual stream of incontinent arsewater on the guardian website about how we should try to "understand the rioters", give 'em a cuddle and hand them more benefits.

I cannot be bothered to post the link as you can probably find it on your own.

funny, I see it as a consequence of promoting greed and self interest, creating a hyper comsumer driven society (guess which party I mean here) where social values of community were not promoted. Where the stars are mulitmillionaires from the world of pro sports, entertainment and business. Scientists and other less glamourous professions not promoted or aspired to.

I actually agree with part of that, although be careful of mentioning parties otherwise this excellent thread may be locked or posts deleted by our moderator.
Nothing wrong with aspiring to be a business multimillionaire - it might encourage the little f***ers to work a bit harder in school. A couple of ASBOs and a GCSE in getting the class bike up the duff might impress the local hoodrats but probably not the best attitude to start a business and make some money.

And for some light relief:

Certainly made me chuckle
