Next weekend's ride

Postby Andy » Sun Mar 14, 2004 7:07 pm

I'm seriously considering, as a newbie, coming out on next Saturday's Addiscombe ride as my first....

But there are some problems. I ride a MTB with MTB tyres, and while I can squeeze out the 15mph on the flat, especially in a group, I don't have cleats either. Is this a major 'you-can't-ride-next-saturday-till-this-is-rectified' problem?

Oh yes, and I'm 5'4" and 15.

I would say change the tyres and you should be fine, don't worry too much about the pedals yet.

first time i came out with the addiscombe, i was 15, on a mtb, and had nobbly tyres(mtb tyres)

only one person showed up that morning, rob royle evatt..and he took me for my longest ride up to that time....70 miles around surrey hills..most id ever done before was the slow pace of london to brighton, so this really killed me...also, i had ordinary shoes and pedals.

dont go buy anything until your certain this is what you want to do, might waste ya money..try out the club runs, maybe a club time trial, all with the kit you got, and if you like it and its teh right sport for you, then start developing your kit.

have fun

Also, pump the tyres up hard and if you have a suspension fork and can adjust it, lock it out or stiffen it up as much as possible -- I did the club ride on a MTB quite a few times, as Marek says slick tyres will make it a lot easier...

Andy,

As you say you are under 16 you will need to fill in a parental consent form. This can be done at the club house on a wednesday night or if you bring a parent or guardian with you to the meeting point of the club run it can be done there.

Ideally I would like to see your road riding skills and assess your fitness level before you head out with a group of riders.

OK - that's excellent advice Rob, reflecting what my parents said.

Fair enough Jayne - Coulsdon SS is nearby, so they'll probably drive me there anyway.
Well I'm pretty sure I'm not unfit, so what do you suggest? Road-riding skills are essential, so it's fair cop that you need to assess me (don't want to cause any crashes).

Anyway I'll probably see you at Coulsdon SS on Sat the 20th....

I'll be recognisable as the midget in the iBanesto (I think)
