How to go round in SRAM circles

Postby Ben » Fri Aug 28, 2009 2:12 pm

Reading in this week’s comic, I see SRAM are doing a product recall on the powerlink bit of the SRAM chain’s (10 Speed)

This brought back memories, as my chain snapped (edit :powerlink bit was no where to be seen) during a time trail in May. I was kindly rescued, out on the course by Jon H, and Tim, who dropped me off home.

At the time, I was slightly baffled, as it was a brand new chain and it’s a rare occurrence that I buy a new one.

So last night, I find the box, as that’s all I have left and inside are one or two links, where the chain was too long, Yes, it’s a 10 Speed SRAM Chain.

Now I phone Evans and then importer Fisher, to see what they have to say. Both of them say I need to send the powerlink and say it’s not a problem with the chain ?

I explain I don’t have the powerlink. I do have the box, and a link or two of the chain.

They say the details on the box or the chain won’t tell them if the powerlink, was at fault and it’s not the chain.

I repeat I don’t have the powerlink, they repeat you need to send the powerlink and it’s not the chain.

I‘ve used KMC chains since, have had no problems.

Snoop’s comments now seem very appropriate.

(Hopefully i have copied the link from the results page correctly)

How come you don't you have the powerlink - was it the bit that broke in the TT?

How did you close your chain then, with a pin?

Perhaps he just bought a new chain and replaced the old one? Doubt you'll get anywhere with the retailer.
If you're in the mood you could always write a clear letter to SRAM explain what you bought and when, what happened that you don't have the chain and enclose the box. But that you now read about the recall. keep it clear and friendly, don't demand or complain and you never know they might replace it.

As a aside - I found out by myself this morning how super-efficient and helpful Fisher are - the same which cannot be said from Butlers.

Yep, this was the bit that snapped, it's somewhere in bletchingley. I bought a load of KMC chains, some of which i sold on.

At least one of which is still going strong (he said, tempting fate).

Take no nonsense from Evans. They were obliged to sell you a chain which was of satisfactory quality. The fact that it snapped when nearly new indicates it was not. That is now supported by the general recall. I can't believe they would kick up a stink over a £25(?) chain. And the primary obligation to sort this is with Evans, not Fisher or SRAM.

I have of course entirely discounted the possibility that you fitted it poorly  .

Right, that's enough consumer advice, I'm going home.
