Just plain stupidity, I don't see why they can't just even up the event count without cutting races, maybe cut the points races and/or madison if needed as they can be difficult to follow what's going on on TV, easy enough when you are there but tricky with camera cuts and not seeing the full track.

Cutting individual races and adding an Omnium just means that you reduce the standard and level of the competition. Instead of having specialists who perform at a supreme level in their specific discipline you end up with a more jack of all trades rider who can ride a good race in a number of events but not an outstanding one at any specific event. They also take a lot of time to run which negates any track time saving their decision is supposed to give.
