Majorca riding/training, April 2010

Postby huw williams » Wed Feb 03, 2010 1:09 am

It's that time of year when we normally consider downing tools and heading to Majorca for a week to 10 days of riding in dry, warm weather. A few people have asked if it's happening this year so this thread is for those who are interested.

Normally we go to Santa Ponsa and stay at the Pionero which gives us access to the coastal roads and inland climbs of the south west of the island, the larger climbs around Puig Major and Soller requiring an all day ride to get there and back - so one of the suggestions this year was to consider an alternative base further north at Porta Polenca - which is where most of the 'organised' training camps tend to stay as it's closer to the big 'uns. This has certain advantages and the only negative I can foresee is that airport transfers would be longer and more expensive.

Other issues to be raised so far are trying to keep the trip away from any ACC organised events and I think that means the middle two weeks of April was thought to be favorite.

Chances are I can't make it this year due to work commitments but I'm trying to remedy that and hope to be there - but it's the easiest thing in the world to organise and it only takes a handful of riders to make a very enjoyable trip, so post here if you're interested and we'll see what happens.

Haha! Plenty of pine needles on the bends to add some excitement to the downhills.

If you go to Puerto Pollenca, meet at Tolo's Restaurant (on the right as you head along the coast towards Alcudia) for CR-type rides.

There's also a bike shop that rents out some top kit:

Count me in - I far prefer the north of the island. From Porta Pollenca you can go off in different directions, whereas Santa Ponsa seemed to be the same way out everytime... Oooh the Formentor road :D

The first hotel I went to in Porta Pollenca was really nice - can't remember the name but it was out from the centre of town a little way up the Formentor road - was an aparthotel with a bedroom, bathroom, lounge and kitchenette : the Pollensa Park was a tad naff and noisier.

Anyone want to share with me - the sofa in the lounge can be turned into a spare bed?

I'm interested, but the timing with work is looking a bit dodgy as I have a project due to finish at the end April. Will have to see how it's looking nearer the time.

Here's where I went, the Playa Mar http://www.marhotels.com/hotel_apartments_playa_mar_puerto_pollensa_majorca_start.html. It says you can have up to four people in the apartments - and the bikes can go out on the balcony.

Or the Oro Playa looks as good.

You'll be relieved to know that due to the fact I can't get out till 22 April earliest and then it's the Open 25 (without looking at the dates) a couple of days later, I've decided that I'll have to give Mallorca a miss, again

I'll have to think of something else to do, like renting out my cousin's holiday home in Lyme Regis (sleeps 6) or even cheaper, go up to Scotland and visit my Scottish dad in Angus...

Training camp's a great idea. I'll probably be doing one again - in Kent, Surrey and maybe even Sussex!

Given the way the weather's been around Europe, I think on balance you might as well stay in London! It's not that brilliant in Mallorca, Lanzarote or the South of France at the moment. Last year the weather was quite hit and miss while we were out in Mallorca. You can get in descent miles and hills around here without the hassle of airport security, delays, lost luggage or a massive hole in your wallet!

Oh, well I might push the boat and go up to Yorkshire! :D

I agree. I would love to go to Mallorca but money/family/time won't allow so I'm heading to the Brecon Beacons for a long weekend in April camping and cycling with 3 friends. £60-£80 for the whole trip. Ideal!

Only ideal if the weather is ok, it can be pretty temperamental in the brecons at that time of the year, so fingers crossed you get some early spring sunshine. 8)
