Mont Ventoux

Postby David Lombari » Tue Apr 20, 2004 2:08 pm

Hi,
Plans are at an embryonic (??) stage but I'm thinking of taking a long weekend and doing Mont Ventoux either early or late summer (May/June or September). Thinking of going Eurostar (£160 return to Avignon) on the Friday, doing the ride on the Saturday and coming back Sunday. Anyone else interested?

Hey Dave,

I was just thinking of doing something like that, possibly as preparation for the etape du tour, possibly just for "fun".

There's a cyclo sportive race going on there called Beaumes de Venise. On the Saturday you do a 174km or 105km looped ride around the area, starting in a little village near Carpentras and taking in Mont Ventoux. The next day there's a hill climb race - 21km up Mont Ventoux.
It'll be on the 1st w/e in June, the 5th and 6th I think.
The details are on a website called sportcommunication.com

Last year when I was returning from a cycling w/e in Nice I met a guy who had just done the event - he said it was pretty hard but it was great fun and very pretty with loads of people to chat to.

I'd be up for that.

Sounds good to me - I think I would need it to be September from my perceived lack of fitness point of view. Also - I posted something on an earlier thread re: Alps - asking questions about gears etc needed to do such a climb. Would need some advice on that kind of thing but the Eurostar idea is a very good one - helps keep time away from family to a minimum. I'll keep a watch on this and see which date gets agreed.

Good suggestion!!

I'd be interested in September trip. May/June weekends pretty much fully booked up.

Can't do 18/19 September.

Checking my diary and September weekends are looking good so very happy to avoid the one Tamar can't make. To ride up Mont Ventoux has been an ambition of mine for yonks - I'm already excited about this - and to have the possibility of doing it with some company - even better. Roll on September (hopefully!)

Thanks for the interest guys. The concencus(?) seems to be for a weekend in Sept so we'll try to organise it for then. Maybe we can come back to it in July/August and we'll pin down the actual weekend?
Cheers, D.

OK

Well currently I could do something on either 11/12 or 25/26.

Happy to go with the flow but the longer we leave it to pin it down - the more likely some snaffler is likely tee come in and pinch the holiday from under me nose - the other 2 weekends are goners already.

Cheers

I think the weather would be better earlier so shall we say the 11th & 12th of September? Anyone else coming now we've set the date? Have looked into flying there and we can fly Ryanair from Stanstead to Nimes, which is only 1/2 hour on the train from Avignon. Though it means a bit of messing about 1.it's cheaper (currently £80 return Friday to Monday) 2.it's quicker....and even going by Eurostar we'd need to change in Lilles.
But we'll definately do it that weekend.

Just another stoopid question.....

Were we to fly....

Presumably I would need to contain my bike somehow..? I've seen rigid bike box thingies in GBs which I'm guessing are for such an occasion. Does anyone know if/where I might try and rent such a container - assuming I survive this ascent I can't seem me being daft enough to try anything like it again for a while so buying a box is probably not a viable option.

Sorry for rambling - advice much appreciated.

Yo Snoop! I used to hire the Scicon boxes from GB's but decided to go down the 'low-tech' route of a soft bike bag, a cardboard bike box cut in half and put inside the soft bag and approx. 200 metres of bubble wrap! However, this isn't easy to transport and I guess the Scicon boxes give you piece of mind (if not guaranteeing the bike arrives in one piece).

I'm currently trying to get the 9th & 10th Sept off work, but, if I can't, will look to go out there late on Friday evening. There's a lot to sort out, and maybe in late July/August everyone interested in going can get together and thrash out a plan.

Chunky D Man

Thanks for the packing tips - nice

I would love to get together for planning over tea and biscuits - am on hols last 2 weeks of July in Southern Brittany for 1st week and chez moi for 2nd. So - end July or early August would be good - my guess is that once we all know when we can get off work - the earlier we book a flight the better from a cost point of view

Cheers fer noo
