Floyd Landis?

Postby -Adam- » Wed Mar 03, 2010 2:27 am

Now then, what with this recent talk of a warrant for Floyds arrest in connection with compute hacking, I have been thinking...

Of all the high profile doping cases, there is something about the Landis case that just doesn't sit right with me.

I am leaning towards genuinely believing that he was set up. Now I haven't read the countless pages of evidence for and against, but I just think that there is something not right about it all. If just one doping case from the last 20 years were to turn out to be a set up, it would have to be this one, right?

I mean surely? Getting done for a drug that needs to be taken over a long period to affect performance, so why'd he take it the night before a one off epic performance? It just doesn't stack up for me.

Thoughts?

Is it niave to believe he didn't cheat? - yeah probably. Following Miller, Hamilton and a host of other high profile drugs cheats its now a case of positive test and you're guilty in the eyes of nearly everyone not just the administrators. I'd like to believe thats not the case with Landis but...anyway turning to things domestically whats going on with Elites and 1st cats? An interesting little thread on veloriders. Good luck in the Seven Bridge Race

I had similar thoughts in my head after seeing him suffer like a dog on a mountain stage, then miraculously smash the entire field on another mountain stage the very next day, while gurning like a loon. In fact that's pretty much when I lost interest in pro cycling - regardless of drug tests, A and B samples, appeals, hearsay, WADA etc, I could no longer personally believe in it being anything approaching a straight race, and I'd dragged myself up an Alp, climbed security fences and evaded gendarmes (http://www.flickr.com/photos/elliot100/196880983/) to watch it.

(Sorry for negativity, personal opinion only)

It's worth reading Robin Parisotto - Blood Sports. If you haven't already. I have a copy.

He covers the main areas i.e how to use medical exemptions and all the other tricks of trade etc. He also goes into the politics. All of which Marco has probably covered at some stage.

I forgot to add one of the rumours, at the time, was they reckon he was blood doping but used blood, from the offseason, when he was alleged to be taking testosterone.

Ben, who is Robin Parisotto and why should I value a book written by him?

Marco, please can you explain to me how testosterone aids recovery?

Rob Parisotto

I was the principal researcher in the EPO 2000 Project at the Australian Institute of Sport which developed the first ever blood tests to be used at the Olympic Games. I recently published a book (Blood Sports - 'the inside dope on drugs in sport). I comment publicly and write for a number of sports websites such as cyclingnews.com and peletonpress.com and many newspapers. I am a research scientist by trade but prefer writing about sport and doping.

The main way that testosterone aids speed in cycling is that it reduces the need to stop and ask directions. Or something about muscle building.

I also heard the story that Landis was accidentally infused with his own blood from off-season when he had been doping with testosterone. And then there was the Kelly incident where he allegedly got a mechanic to donate for a urine test. Unfortunately the mechanic had been taking amphetamines.

I guess he did dope but I find it hard to understand why Landis would take a drug which would have minimal impact to his performance, he knew was detectable and then go for a stage win knowing that he will be tested.

Why is the lab upset about someone hacking their system if they have nothing to hide and they seemed happy to let someone leaked LAs results.

Vino admitted it after though, right?

My understanding of testosterone is that it needs to be taken over a long period of time in order to stimulate muscle growth. So why would he have taken it once?

You’d have to make that judgement but if you want to borrow happy to lend it.
Interesting points to me from the book, in reference to this thread, is how Phonak, upset the authorities i.e UCI, IOC , WADA with all the problems in 2004 aka Hamilton , Perez plus others.
Secondly he raises valid points about Human Growth Hormone, i.e no study has concluded that Hgh actually helps elite male athletics of a given age, yet it’s on the banned list.

So why'd it turn up in his test result? Surely your uber sceptical mind must smell at least the wiff of a rat there, Marco?
