bike maintenance for niblets

if like me you are a bike maintenance niblet, ie not quite the full corncob, (I just made that up, can you tell...?), and you live in Sutton, watch out for a bike leaflet sponsored by TfL dropping though the door. There are a few discount vouchers including a bike service for £20 @ Ecolocal. My mtb is going in on Monday will report back.

Sounds good Snoop. I was hoping for a maintenance training course. Anyone know any really cheap ones that will teach me the basics?

The maintenance I don't mind. I want someone to clean the bikes for me though.

Has anyone ever put a chain, chainrings, cassette in a dishwasher? It might work. I think some of the plastic bits on the rear mech might suffer at that temperature though.

And then you're left with the problem of cleaning the dishwasher.

Actually, the biggest problem would be the corrosion of the chain and cassette (both made, at least in part, of steel) due to the salt in the detergent and the damp heat of the drying cycle.

Go here: www.parktool.com
And buy this, adding tools as you go: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1934 ... d_i=468294

Apart from fitting a headset you should be able to do most things yourself

I did a course in basic bike mechanics at an Adult Education centre. Can't remember where but it was over towards Richmond way.

Found I knew most of it - it was just lack of practice...

As for headsets - do these help?

Park CRS1 - crown race setting system http://www.madison.co.uk/productinfo.as ... ref=QKCRS1

Park RT1 - head cup remover 1 / 1-1 / 8 / 1-1 / 4 inch http://www.madison.co.uk/searchresults. ... e=0&kw=rt1

Park HHP2 - head and hanger cup press http://www.madison.co.uk/productinfo.as ... ref=QKHHP2

Cyclus press http://www.i-ride.co.uk/product/CYC720009.html

Thanks guys, I thinkk i'll pick up Zinn.

I wouldn't mind doing a course too. Find I learn more when I see things in the flesh rather than from a book.

They probably would, and if you fit a new one every couple of years they might be worth it. However you're better off buying a £100 Chris King H/S, let your LBS fit it for free and then you're sorted for the next 10 years :D

My tough love approach helped with puncture repair, though - drive you to a car park, tell you you have a flat, then leave you to fix it. Who says chivalry's dead? :D

If it's a question of time then I try to get the blokes to change a tyre for me - it's a heck of a lot quicker...

I've had plenty of practice though since...
