Club run 16 May

Postby Amy » Sat May 15, 2010 5:33 pm

Well, that was a rather eventful ride... Hope everyone got back home and more or less in one piece.

Felt quite good after the Mayflyer last week so decided to see how I was doing and went with an 18s group. I wasn't intending to be leading any group - just hanging on the back for awhile. All in all a very disciplined group who stayed together pretty well on the whole though I did have to shout a bit  There was one person who shall remain nameless who rather blotted his copybook - all I can add, is don't do that again, especially not in Addiscombe kit

My apologies to the guy who got dropped on the way out and seemed to spend the rest of the ride down to the cafe on his own. I was told you'd been struggling to stay on and as there was probably another group not far behind you'd be picked up by them. Felt even worse when you said your seatpack had broken too...

I was going quite well, hanging on even up the hills - though to be honest I felt it was quite a relaxed pace most of the time :D Slight moment of panic when someone cut up Pete just before Rusper  Then we hit the 'resurfaced' road and I thought that if it carried on out the other side of the village, it would make the adverse camber on the righthand bend even more 'fun'.

I was right - already warning my group to take it easy we looked up to see bikes all over the road on the bend and a couple of figures on the ground. I'd been managing to hold my 18s off from the back of Kate's group of 18s since we saw them coming out of Dawes Green but now we'd definitely caught them up.

Fortunately only one person had come down really badly though I'm sure Bridget is still feeling a bit shaken even though her fall was broken by poor Sam. We managed to clear the road and get Sam and his bike to the side of the road where some assessed the damage to the bike and his Dad took photos of his wounds. Luckily no broken bones and the bike was made rideable. Also managed to warn a couple more groups coming behind us.

Kate took her group and mine on to the cafe via the usual route while a few of us stayed with Sam and Jon until he felt able to ride and we rode slowly to the cafe - well at least Sam, Jon and I did - where we raided the first aid box and Sam had his Dad running up and down getting him tea and cake (but all the cake had gone...). I assume that Sam was safely collected by his Mum and there was no further damage found.

After all that the ride back was a bit flat - nice pace though - only got dropped on the golf course (though I did overtake Marcus, again    )

Just a reminder to anyone who had used stuff from the first aid kit previously - don't forget to replace it as it seemed to be missing a few useful items such as antiseptic wipes.

Glad you're ok Sam and they are just superficial cuts and bruises. You need to slow down son

About 10 of us on the alternative cr today. A very pleasant ride via Chipstead - Walton on the hill - Headley down little Switzerland and then reverse box hill run to Newdigate where we stopped at the farm shop before Rusper golf course and sat in the garden for some lovely cake and coffee. Carried on doing the cr to Charlwood via partridge and then the reverse run to Reigate with a climb to the top of Reigate hill from the other side (dont know the name of the road) After regrouping a quick blast back to Coulsdon via Fanny's farm and a coffee at Nona's. Great ride, good company and the weather wasn't bad either 8)

But that's the fun part.

Hope the road rash heals quickly Sam and look forward to seeing you on the Club 10s again soon.

Sam didn't know you'd gad an off when we went by you today. I'm sure you'll be back stronger and faster in no time.

Let your scabs mature before pealing them off and keeping them to show your grandkids.

You could have found an easier way to get a new bike, hope it was worth it and you get a nice new carbon model.

My club ride was with the 2nd 17s today lead by Phil and Alex, I lead out fron CSS. We dropped part of our group and freewheeled mostly to the 3 peaks (22 mph freewheeling through Merstham). Having waited at Reigate we were caught by JCs group.

Cracked on there after at a medium pace. Having tried to stay away from the front after my early stint, I however found not everyone wanted to have a turn. I found myself on the front with Serena a couple of times, once after getting dropped at Rusper.

We kept a pace of around 20 after Rusper where no one went for the sprint. That's probably unfair as Serena and I were on the front and she won it. Hooray for Serena :D

As gor the ride back same ad Amy's.

Nice weather and a relaxed ride (it's good for a fragile ego to be told you should be in a faster group) leaving me with plenty in the tank to start the sprint far too early (again) but get away with it. I hope Graham (sp?) is OK - he had to drop out due to breathing problems. Maybe singing Tom Lehrer songs as we ride is not a sensible practice to adopt more generally. I think a bit of G&S might work though.

Went back via Box. The group split early but after dithering, for some reason I decided to spend 15 miles trying to catch the faster bunch. Which I did on the A24, but then was too far gone to do anything else other than spin slowly up the hill and roll home. Dropped the bike down at Pearsons so they could take a look at the back wheel which seems to be suffering from having a fat bloke ride on it (I don't mind taking a spoke key to a 36 spoke 3 cross, but anything modern scares me).

That gravel on the turn was nasty. I'm not surprised that someone came a cropper. Hope Sam recovers soon.

CR 15th MAY

Postby Jon C C on a Bianchi » Sun May 16, 2010 10:47 am

Thanks for all your best wishes for Sam - I've passed them (and scab advice) on to him. He slept surprisingly well, seems pretty perky this morning, sitting eating breakfast with ice packs attached to various bits of his body!

Just bought new shorts and helmet for him- but no Addiscombe short sleeve shirts on the website???!! Anyone know what's going on? Not listed rather than out of stock. (and no ACC socks either??!). Are GBs stopping stocking our kit as it runs out? Tried phoning them but just kept ringing and ringing as usual.

Glad to hear Sam is ok. I hope my riding into his head and then falling on top of him didn't contribute to the injuries too much. Sorry Sam!

A few weeks back GBs had a medium sized short sleeved jersey, but I think not small.

Thanks, Bridget - he's feels bad that he made you crash - he's just pleased he managed to break your fall!

I'll give GBs a ring and hope they manage to answer the phone.

We took him to A and E today - told that we should have brought him in yesterday - failed as parents yet again!

GB's don't open on a Sunday hence they are not answering the phone!

Are we having another round of naff road surfacing. It seems as though the councils are doing the same as last year and just throwing down a load of stones and calling that resurfacing. I just don't understand the benefit of what they do as all that happens is the holes get harder to see and you have a load of gravel to slip on. What happened to good old black tarmac, or is the deficit too great for such an expense.

Hope you get better soon Sam, from the pictures it doesn't look too bad, just a pain to keep clothing from sticking to your side. Best advice is to leave the wound on your side open to the elements as much as possible. So just walk around the house with no pants on as it will dry up quicker. I found that Vaseline was quite good to put on the wound if I was going to be putting material over the top, although someone else mentioned to me that it wasn't the best thing to do.

Cheers

Marek.....
