toby kerr - injured

Has Toby been in an accident? Yes. (updated in light of Tamar's post)

from bikeradar forum:

Anyone know what happened? Seems to be serious if the BBC are reporting.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-surrey-11617679

Yes it was the Surrey league Ottershaw series race 1. I didn't see the crash as I'd been dropped. I helped the race first aiders until the ambulance arrived. He had a serious head injury.

Putting together some witness accounts after the race a rider in front of Toby clipped a wheel, went down sideways, and then he went into him, somersaulting over the bars onto his head. This was on a down hill stretch before the left hand bend into the finishing straight so they will have been going fast. His helmet was a mess and looked like it had taken a lot of the force....

Fingers crossed he comes through intact.

from surrey league entry list:

Tobias Kerr Addiscombe CC 3
James Jones Beeline Bicycles RT 2
Robin Parker East Grinstead CC 3V
Peter Wager Felt-Colbornes RT 1
Mark Workman Festival RC 2
Cameron Austin London Dynamo 1
Roy McGregor London Dynamo 3
Chris Batch Redhill CC 3V
Phill Cloke San Fairy Ann CC 2V
Shane Pope Swindon RC 2
Matthew Wakeford Team Nemesis 3
Mark Spindler Twickenham CC 3
Daniel Gillow Wyndymilla 3
Riders entered @ October 22nd

Only Toby on the list?

Wish you a full and speedy recovery.

Couple of reports I found:

[quote]About 2km to go there was a radio call from the back that a crash had happened near the rear of the peloton. After the race no-one seemed to be quite sure what had happened, about 4/5 riders down.
Professional first aid on scene immediately (SL pay to have a following professional first aid/ambulance service at every race) along with NEG helping secure the scene. Rider taken to hospital with head injuries.
A sad incident in a very well contested, and organised, race.

[quote]A mate riding the race said it was just "one of those things" which usually end up with bumps and bruises, but the poor guy fell on his head. Did say the NEG bloke and the first aid guy were excellent, keeping it all under control until the blue lights arrived. Guy who was taken to hospital was unconscious.

I was also riding in yesterday's Ottershaw road race with Toby.

On the last lap, the main bunch of around 50 remaining riders was still together, heading up the slight rise on Longcross Road, a bit before the last left turn into Accommodation Road.

I didn't directly witness Toby's crash, but was caught up in the melee behind.

Toby had sustained head injuries and was immediately attended to firstly by the race ambulance that was following directly behind the main peloton, and then by an NHS ambulance.

He was initially taken to A&E at the nearby St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey. He was later transferred to St George's - I believe they are head injury specialists.

This afternoon his condition was described to me as critical but stable.

Yep a real gent. Sounds a terrible incident and I wish you all the best in your recovery, you've had a very good season such a shame for it to end this way.
