WATCHING THE TOUR IN A PUB

Postby Toks » Sun Jul 04, 2004 5:45 pm

DO YOU LIVE IN CENTRAL LONDON? Watch the tour LIVE and in fairly nice surroundings with lots of screens: "THE F3K " SPORTS PUB - LITERALLY ON THE RIGHT OF WEST KENSINGTON TUBE STATION. There's others you can try if you go to http://www.sportspubs.co.uk

I watched the prologue in a sparsely populated pub, the George, on Canterbury Road. (I was using the laundry just down the road.)

I got into an animated discussion after I got my pint and requested ITV2, saying "I'm the cycling expert." I got a lot of questions:

"Is that Boardman still riding?"

"What about Indurain?"

"How about that Italian ... ermmm ... Chiapucci! That's it."

I fielded them all, doing a blinder of commentary as well. I should be on telly - at least I can pronounce "Hushovd" correctly.

Also, I watched the Cap' Decouverte TT and the Luz Ardiden stages last year at a sports bar at the bottom of the Haymarket in central London. Several screens (including the big screen in back) and a lively bipartisan audience screaming for Lance and Jan.

Also this one for charity:

"Le Tour on TV in a pub :

Sport is, we are sure you'll agree, a good thing. Even if you can't compete, you can sit down with your friends, have a beer and disagree about just about everything.

However, basking in such conviviality can be difficult if you're a cyclist. Not because you have no friends, or because cycling can't be compelling to watch, but because we don't live in a cycle-addicted culture.

This year's Tour de France should make compelling viewing, with Ullrich, Hamilton, Heras and Mayo all wanting to depose King Armstrong.

So, why not watch the highlights in the pub?
The Duke of York, near Condor, will be showing throwing open its doors and showing highlights of the last mountain stages on a big screen.

From 7pm on July 20-23, there will be the chance to come down, have a drink and enjoy the atmosphere, watching some of the world's finest athletes do battle. Including the Alpe d'Huez time trial on the 21st.

And, since we're all getting together, it makes sense to try to raise a bit of money for charity.
Each night, we will be raffling off some great cycling kit donated by Foska.com, giving you the chance to win a TdF Centenary shirt, or a Lion of Flanders design.

All the tickets will then be put together for the grand prize draw on Friday night, with the chance to win more Foska.com goodies or a £400 road, track or mountain bike frame from Condor cycles.

The Duke of York is easy to get to from both the City and the West End, so wander down after work, enjoy the atmosphere, raise some money for Cancer Research UK and watch the World?s greatest sporting event unfold.

Do you know if the Duke of York are showing things during the day as well? I think I'm going ot take the day off for the Alpe d'Huez TT but with no Eurosport I need somewhere to watch it......
