This world is going nuts. If a business provides a poor quality product, you go else where or possibly encourage them to improve. Donating equipment to a legitimate profitable business so it can provide you a better product is an ideology which is completely bonkers. The Pine Cafe can afford its own coffee machines but choose not to use them because it would eat into their 99% profit margin. Are you going to donate the filter paper too? Why don't you donate a book on baking cakes while you are at it too.

I agree - so why the hell does the club run keep going there? This "solution" is just a sticking plaster trying to compensate for a thoroughly inadequate caff that frankly we should have abandoned years ago. It's an unimaginative repetitive ride to a crap cafe. There - I've said it.

Maybe somebody has a toaster lying around that we could give them. The sound of me scraping the toast drowned out all conversation on my table in the "garden" on Saturday. And perhaps introduce them to the spread known as "butter".
My local Birleys in the City does a cheaper, tastier fried egg'n'bacon sarny so perhaps we could reroute the club run north along the A23 from CSS?

What is it about then? Because the route is as dull as the cafe.

It's about a weekly training session with a group of like minded riders that requires no further organisation. Having somewhere that doesn't turn their nose up at you and serves a steaming mug of tea when you arrive wet, sweaty & mud splattered is a bonus.

If you want to go for a nice bike ride and drink decent coffee, I suggest you might like to go on different routes to different cafes. I certainly do.

Spot on Keith (yeah I know - I just said that). I've been persuaded by my better half (who is much more athletically minded than me  ) that there is value in the regular weekly sameness of the route from a training perspective. When I was training for my time trials I did a lot of repeat business on the turbo trainer (and hey there's a boring route!). This way I could get some kind of measure for me and coach Viney to work with, see what was working, what wasn't, etc etc.

And I also don't understand those who moan about the caff and/or the route and keep turning up doing it week in week out. There are a thriving range of alternative rides on offer - take one if you like. It's no secret what I think of the regular club run - and so I don't use it. There is a downside of course, and that is I miss some of the company I used to enjoy when the Coulsdon - A23 - Charlwood was the only gig in town. So these days when I start my ride from CSS I make a point of saying hi and catching up with as many folks as I can before choosing a road less travelled.

Most organisations tend to calcify as they grow. People take time to adapt and change, and a lot of people don't have the imagination or the will to do things differently, even though they might frequently criticise and complain. That's not a criticism in itself, just an observation drawn from years of studying companies, clubs, charities etc etc.

And lest we forget since Jon was made club run captain we now have regular Sunday rides, and just a couple of weeks ago Jon came out with the disagreeables. That simply did not happen previously - and I for one was very pleased to see Jon out that day. Cheers Jon.

I just wanna ride my damn bike. See you out and about soon I hope :D
otherwise say NOTHING.

I can understand your frustration at perhaps not receiving the precise response which you might have expected, but check this out to help develop a more relaxed attitude to conflicting opinions :

fo·rum (fôrm, fr-)
n. pl. fo·rums also fo·ra (fôr, fr)
1.
a. The public square or marketplace of an ancient Roman city that was the assembly place for judicial activity and public business.
b. A public meeting place for open discussion.
c. A medium for open discussion or voicing of ideas, such as a newspaper, a radio or television program, or a website.
2. A public meeting or presentation involving a discussion usually among experts and often including audience participation.
3. A court of law; a tribunal.

You'll note "place for open discussion" and "voicing of ideas".

We can all get a tad irritated when people don't always agree with us. But I find that camomile tea and cutting down on caffeine helps

I was in a good mood when I caught up with this thread and thanks largely to Bob, I remain so.

Dear Mr McTaffy, we've not yet met so I don't know and you don't know me, so please don't take this the wrong way. This forum is pretty mild compared to many I've visited. It is an open exchange of views and frankly, folks (me definitely included) seem to fall out around here more often than a porn stars tools of the trade. And we very quickly get over it too. I read lots of things on here I don't like and that's just the way it goes. Some of us feel strongly about stuff and yes at times that means threads wander off track. Up hill and down dale. I don't believe people generally do it to offend we're just opinionated and in my case sometimes grumpy too.

As for being what you term an "alternative" I guess whether or not I appreciate that depends on what the "regular" tag applies to. In any event you've caused me to reflect on my time here at the ACC. I forget exactly when I joined but I think I've done ten years now so I'm getting on a bit. In that time I've marshalled at more races than I care to remember. I served the club as marshalling coordinator for two years (tough job - trust me). I've served as a committee member, as club welfare officer (crap job - trust me). I've raced proudly in the club colours, and I spent over twelve months writing press copy for the local papers about our club, week in week out. I've been the fortunate and humble recipient of our Cambridge Tankard and our Memorial Trophy (honestly - I cried when Tamar called me to let me know about that one).Maybe that lot does make me "alternative" in which case it is a tag I gladly accept. First and foremost however I am simply a paid up member of Addiscombe Cycling Club.

Hope to see you down the road sometime and now I'm off for some of that tea Bob recommended
