Just4fun Group

Postby Andy » Thu Sep 02, 2004 4:29 pm

Typically, when there's a special group specified, I can't do it since I recently broke bones in my hand......

But if possible - and I'd be very grateful - I'd like to know how fast/far Sept 4's Just4fun group goes, since I'm definitely keen in going for the October/November/etc one, if it's still there....

Hmm..... so anyone? Anyone with any kind of vague memory of it, I'd be grateful.

I took part in the September run, just4fun. I can't rememeber the mileage but it wasn't far. As to speed, well, Tim who led this group, was very good having turned up with his young son and they both rode on mountain bikes. The pace was leisurely-certainly less than the advertised 13mph. When necessary Tim would stop to let every one regroup.

I thought it was an excellant way to introduce people to the club runs and not in the least intimidating.

As an addendum I turned up the following week which split into two groups. The slow group at a somewhat fast average 17mph and the faster group at 19mph.

I'm not sure what happened but I lost sight of the slow group, that I started with, after being held up in traffic. I continued on and eventually caught a glimpse of a group about a quarter of a mile up the road. It was a hard job chasing them down and they seemed to be going rather quickly.
When I got up onto the back of the group I was told that it wasn't the slow group, as I had thought, but the fast group :!: I felt such a fool  . Apparently the slow group had turned off earlier whilst out of my sight.

OK, I'm hoping to be there October 2 then...... haven't ridden in a few months though, the all clear comes 2 weeks before then :o Still, 12mph or so isn't that bad.

I remember going on other first-of-the-month rides - maybe a bit fast, going a good 16+mph on the flat (nice feeling though) - but the distance just got me. Or rather the climb on the way back, too
