Cycling books recommendations

Postby Phil H » Fri Dec 09, 2011 11:09 pm

I'm just compiling my Amazon Wishlist (as you do) and I realised I hadn't got any cycling books on there. I wondered if anyone had any suggestions. Ones I've got/read already:

Put me back on my bike - in search of Tom Simpson (this is a fantastic book BTW)
French revolutions (worth a read)
Racing through the dark - David Millar
In search of Robert Millar
Boy Racer - Cav
In pursuit of glory - Wiggins
When we were young and carefree - Fignon (reading this at the moment - nearly finished)

Anything else worth a read?

Phil I've got loads of books if you wanted to borrow some?

Wide eyed and legless
The hour
Rough Ride
The man who cycled the world
The rider

They're just the ones I can remember off the top of my head. Think there may be a couple more kicking around the place...

These are all pretty good:
Slaying the Badger - Richard Moore (Lemond vs Hinault)
French Revolutions - Tim Moore (laugh-out-loud tale of a mamil riding the 2000 or 2001 TdF route)
It's Not about the bike - Lance Armstrong
Every Second Counts - Lance Armstrong
Lance Armstrong: Tour de Force - Daniel Coyle

And if you want an absolutely brilliant, feel good film for xmas, this is great, "Breaking Away". Rarely on telly and a bargain at less than a fiver:

Some good suggestions already. I'd add
A dog in a hat by Joe Parkin
Breaking the Chain by Willy Voet
A Peiper's Tale by Allan Peiper

Hi everyone :D
One addition.
Matt Seaton The Escape Artist
An amature cyclist pushing the boundaries.
I just couldn't put it down.

There's references to Palace, Herne Hill and local places like Westerham hill.
You can have my copy as I've read it twice and unlikely to read it again.

thanks

Plus...
Two wheels on my wagon - Paul Howard
Riding through the storm - Geoff Thomas
Wonder Wheels - Eileen Sheridan
A Moustache, poison and blue glasses
The End to End Story - John Taylor (not a particularly good writer but an interesting book to read about the various records).

And I should mention 100 Years Of Cycling Road Records by Roy Green :D .

How's about:

War and Peace (Tolstoy)
Pride & Prejudice (Austin)
The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Milan Kundera)
Great Expectations (Dickens) ....

Oh, sorry, think I'm misunderstanding the real direction of this post

(the last book mentioned by Andrew should fit the bill, though.

The History of Addiscombe Cycling Club - by Chris Watts.

Available from all good book retailers. Oh, actually no it's not.
But it is available from either Chris herself or from me.

That sounds a bit niche, but as the 'holder' of a Trowbridge to Reading and back trophy, I have a personal interest. Is it still in print?

I would also recommend The Hour - the story of Dr Hutch's battles against adversity, the clock, tub glue and (mostly) the UCI.

If you fancy a big shiny book, Campagnolo - 75 Years of Passion.*

DVDs - A Sunday in Hell and Belleville Rendezvous will keep me occupied while Mrs I is watching Downton Abbey on Christmas day.

*Other groupsets are available, but big shiny books about them might not be.

If we're talking big and shiny then Mountain High is a nice glossy read or a good coffee table book.

I'm looking forward to Alberto Contador's autobiography.
Working title "The Steaks are High".

From memory your record doesn't feature Mike.
It covered the first 100 years for the anniversary so is a bit out of date the anniversary being in 1988, so doesn't cover the more recent records. I'm sure you're more interested in people like Opperman though  .
From the RRA website:
The first 100 years of the RRA's history is recorded in Roy Green's book
"100 years of Cycling Road Records"
The book is in hardback, and has 110 pages with many illustrations. Copies are available from either:
Brian Edrupt, RRA General Secretary
136 Beaconsfield Road,
Middlesex EN3 6AY

Keith Robins, 155 South Park Crescent,
Catford, London SE6 1JN,
priced at £7.00 including postage and packing.

A fairly obscure record, and I do wonder if anyone other than Mr I snr ever attempted it. He gave me the trophy because "You're too slow to win anything yourself" .

Thanks for the info; I may get myself a copy.
