Bottom bracket trouble

Postby Amy » Fri Apr 06, 2012 6:41 pm

2nd attempt at changing worn cups (or rather the ball bearings inside cups) with new ones. Mechanic friend checked that they were the right ones with Spa Cycles.... but no, still not right, ball bearings seem to be in different place to old ones  So the old ones went back on...

In the meantime, I went to wipe a bit of dampness out of the bb because last time we had the cups off, it was quite wet inside. Managed to dislodge another bit of the bb still inside and about a cup of water poured out from wherever it'd been collecting  Still more water came out of the chain stay

The plan is, at the end of the summer and the bike is put away for the winter, to dismantle it a bit and allow everything to dry out before sealing up the holes in the frame (left in during construction to allow hot air out...)...

Mechanic will be contacting Stronglight and find out what exactly are they playing at with the bottom bracket - cos their Activ link bbs and chain sets are bl00dy expensive and they were the only ones I could find that did 165 cranks in a 48/34 (or even 50/34 for that matter...). Here's to third time lucky...

Some frames can collect a bit of water when it chucks it down. Worth giving the bike a drain when you get home after a ride like that, jus tip it upside down and then back and up on end etc. I remember Jondoing this after a TT in foul weather a few years ago and a load drained straight out. Better to do this than leave it sitting in the frame.

I'm sticking with my square taper BB/chainsets :) .
