No. But after the shooting outside our house before Christmas, it was fun getting a bike past the armed guards for a little while.

Not sure it's much safer in Croydon though ...

Hi Guys,

I got myself added to the general mailing list sometime ago, as I was interested in the idea of trying out one of the club runs, but I have to admit that late nights out on Fridays and Saturdays tend to make early starts very hard. I bought a mountain bike in the summer after many years with only a road bike. I've started exploring the local trails, although working out where I can and can't go isn't the easiest thing. Any advice on potential routes would be much appreciated.

Obviously I would be interested in trying to join a weekend mtb ride or two, or maybe even on a regular basis, but that is very dependant on my nights out.....!

Cheers,

David

Hi there

Marco who was doing the weekly newsletter has passed on this role recently and i think it's not entirely decided who will do this in the future.
As mtb secretary i ought to know what's going on with the sunday ride but i must admit not having taken part in the last few months, mainly due to racing most sundays.

I intend to do more racing and training next year so i would be thankful if someone who has been out on a sunday mtb ride recently could report on the numbers and frequency of the rides lately.

There is plenty to explore around croydon and further afield (north downs, leith hill etc). The pace is generally easy enough to accomodate light hangovers (although vomiting isn't allowed).

I don't partake in the consumption of alcoholic drinks, but still seem to wake up relatively late on a Sunday feeling rough!

I've been doing my best to scan over the maps I have and find different routes. I have also scanned some of the old ride reports on this forum, and on the main website. So far I've not strayed too far off road, but I get the impression that there are lots of possible routes both near-by and further afield.

Went on my first MTB sunday ride today and brought two mates along to give it a go. There was about 8 of us at the start. Graham took us on a short trip through lloyd park passed some golf courses through some forests etc.

Good time had by all I would say.

Had to borrow and MTB bike so might have to go and get one of my own now. Now where did I put that visa card............

8 of us out (no Shaun - where were you?) including a couple of "new to MTB" riders. A steady paced trip around the classic night ride route including a descent of Rachel's interrupted by a couple stopping in the midlle of the track to get better acquainted with each other, and my rear tyre developing a 1/2" tear.

Gavin. For a good value MTB, the Specialized and Trek ranges are a good starting point. just like with road bikes have a test ride, and go with what feels best rather than being seduced by a brand name.

I was tempted into 'another bike' visa mode on saturday and went for the cheapest in the range specialized 'rockhopper' at £450 from bikeplus - this looks good enough as a starter kit and you can upgrade to disc brakes later if you wish - so will hope to be out on the occasional sunday when my usual sailing looks doubtful - is there a regular meeting point and time?

The meeting point is the taxi rank at the east end of East Croydon railway station (ECBR), the time is a "relaxed" 10am each Sunday. That means that people start arriving at about 10am, we chat and faff for a while, then argue about where we are going, and at what speed. We usually set off at about 10:20 to 10:25.
