Box Hill after the cafe

Postby Paul on the Pearson » Tue Jan 04, 2005 7:50 pm

Managed to get out on the bike a bit over the holidays so being a new year, start as you mean to go on and all that malarky would any one (hopefully more than one) be up for a more regular Box Hill (gentle) meander after the cafe on Saturday?
Box Hill via Leigh, Brockam, Dorking, Ranmore. I dont know if the bit through Dorking will be a bit busy on a Saturday morning , as I normally go Thursdays. This just happens to be the way I know. Any other suggestions for better, more scenic routes etc?

Paul,

I would be up for this but I won't be able to keep up for a couple of months. I will be back in the 15mph group tomorrow and I mean at the back......

Need to do hills weekly so hope you can get a few people together for it.

Cheers

I will probably be up for this. Not been out for a few weeks so may not feel great, still having a few niggles with my left knee. I know a good route to Box Hill via Whitedown (18%) which is more of a short sharp shock of a hill as opposed to Box Hill which is long and steady.

I think that if you were to do the Whitedown route then you may want to go to Rusper and then not go to Charlwood but head straight over to Ockley way and into the back roads to Whitedown. Route I would say would give you about 80km from CSS and back.

If you fancy it then I will probably go out with the 17mph group and we can decide what people want to do at CSS. I will be on a white Alan and I will probably be wearing T Mobile kit.

Cheers

A bit under the weather this Saturday so didn't come out but a few hills next week'll be good. Whitedown sounds good (or bad) I might have a practice run this Thursday.

Cheers Ian, you are correct in your presumption that I may have ballooned on my holidays. Staying with the in laws in Poland and eating and drinking far too much. I am now a wallowing 86kg. Need to get a few of those off but will do it nice and slow, want to keep some of the fat to keep me warm as I could not get time to get down to the 20% sale and therefore have not got any new threads to keep me warm.

Next Saturday may do the longer Box Hill route if anyone is up for it. The week after is the longer hilly ride which should be fun.

Cheers

Looking at your original post i think that we may be thinking the same route. I would normally do something like this:

Turn right at Rusper
Right at roundabout
Take the left off the dual carriageway to Ockley
Ockley then towards I think it is Gomshall
Right in Gomshall
Left over whitedown (18%er lovely) and then right at the end
at top of Ranmore turn left past the church
excellent descent
come out on dual carriageway turn left
Go 100 yards turn right for Box hill
etc

It may be the same or a similar route to what you were indicating. Anyway, on the 22nd January I am leading a longer hilly ride which will take in some of this route. Planning on leaving CSS at 8.30am will take in a lot of the tough climbs on the Tour of the Surrey Hills audax route. See if you can come along, we will be trying to average around 17mph but will wait for people on the hills if they are taking it a little slower.

Cheers
