has this happened to any other agreeables. I took approximately a 6 days off the bike in the third week of August - just to spent some quality time with my son (age 9) who came down from Sheffield to stay with me. My first ride back was a 60 miler - I thought I was gonna die everytime someone pushed the pace even slightly (18mph av). The next day I did an easy 30miles and felt fine. Two days later I did a fastish hour (22mph av) felt terrible for the first 15mins but great after. Next day rest, the day after 3 hour endurance ride (felt bad for the first hour then ok in the second and rough for the last hour (17mph,av). Finally, today 3 hours felt great for the first hour then terrible when i tried to push the pace for about 20 mins and then felt great for the last 45mins riding at 25mph (wind assisted).... Anyway blah blah blah what I'm basically saying is I have no idea, why fitness wise, i'm blowing hot and cold on longish rides.This has never happened before! I don't think I'm over trained, i'm eating, drinking and and sleeping ok. Any ideas people (keep them clean!)

Hmm, I think the difference between feeling good and bad is difficult to explain when you are doing such different things.

I sometimes feel bad going on a long slow ride because I think you are using a different part of your metabolism. I have ridden to Brighton and back before at break neck speed and felt fine. Then I have ridden Brighton and back with slower riders and on the way back felt awful. Maybe something to do with metabolism and also to do with the actual amount of time you are in the saddle cycling.


Also I think the difference between what you are feeling when you ride at different paces is to do with your body becoming accustomed to the different stresses that you are putting on it. So in your fast ride when you started off you felt bad, this is pretty normal and then your body gets used to the pain and you feel alright. Then the slower part you felt bad again but when you pushed it again because you had already done a hard session earlier your body was not so shocked so you flew at your 25mph.

Maybe you should do more interval type training to get your body used to the different stresses etc, but I think you should just do more racing and you will be fine. Not much of the season left matey hope to see you out soon.

p.s. what do you intend to do over winter, planning to do lots of long rides steady pace starting early if you fancy it.

not fair to say old age! maybe what is associated with old age,

I know emotional state plays havoc with fitness, ie stressed (work and minor daily events), moving flat , women !! getting enough sex :oops:

so you are drinking well Toks :wink:

have you changed you training routine? I think Marek is spot on with the metabolism, I definitely feel better (stronger) sometimes when riding under duress (ie with load)

its always difficult to flip between speed and distance

Dr. Simon recommends even more discipline, harder training dude!! but remember

less bike = more smile!

I haven't schecked my resting heart rate for about a year. Its normally between 47-49. I will monitor it closely now that you've mentioned it. Cheers Marco
