Buen Mallorca

Postby Alan M » Sat Sep 17, 2005 3:24 pm

Someone said this morning that there might not be a Mallorca trip this year - I very much enjoyed a 5 days away last spring and felt that the climbs and the change in scenery were beneficial to my summer performance and confidence. I would be interested in going if others were. I think that it revolved around the last week in March first in April last year and that seemed OK with some taking either the first or second week, some on a long weekend and others there for the full monty (sorry)! Flights were considerably cheaper if booked early.

Cheers

I would def be up for a trip again- its so good to get away from dreary skys- even tho it was a bit wet this year- year before however was pretty warm. I think chris and lisa are keen as well- which is pretty handy as he can fix all the bikes again!
Nigel has got to change his tyres and tubes tho because his only seem to last 10k.

Normally go early Feb to watch the pros racing.

I definitely want to go away early next year for some decent mountainous miles. Not sure if I'll do Mallorca or not. I love it...esp our restaurant and hotel....but would be nice to ride somewhere different.

Can recommend Dolomites. The climb up to the Marmalada Glacier is a b*tch.

There seems to be some level of agreement for something but I accept that I got the date wrong - and Malloca isn't the only possible destination, perhaps further discussions could happen on the way to and at Charlwood on Saturday? I doubt that we could go very high in February 'cos of the white stuff!

Cheers

I may be interested but it depends if my work will let me have enough time off to cycle across america.

If I go then no holidays for me else big build up early for the marmotte 2006 ;) So I would be up for hill training.

Cheers

I would have thought that the italy side of things would be under snow at the earlier part of the year- tho i could be wrong, having said that it snowed the last week in jan in palma- majorca is probably the closest place to us for mountain climbs that is not under snow - hence the pro tour starting there- european part anyway. When we went to sierra nevada at easter last year the weather was great but on the mountains it was still snow capped- whilst climbing pico veleta all the cars coming up had skis and snowboards on the roof rack! ( this was mid march)

The 2006 Mallorca pro races are in the first full week in Feb. I think the snow this year was fairly exceptional weather for there, although going that early in the year is always going to be a bit chilly compared to say late March or April when most folks go and do their pre race season training camps. Mind you, calling our week a training camp would be pushing it a bit, unless it was training for alcoholism.

I'm definitely up for a training camp.

I get the impression that Italy is a bit hit and miss weather-wise though.

The Gran Fondo (Italian cyclo-sportive) season starts in late February, so that suggests the weather is favourable for road cycling. They do events in various parts of Italy (including the North) and the photos that I've seen in the magazines show that the weather was good on the day of the event. (Or was that some sort of digital image trickery that they were doing ??)

However, when I went to Tuscany (Central) in May last year it rained most of the time. The G.F. di Campagnolo was a washout as well. Went to Amalfi coast/Sorrento (South) in March this year - it was rainy and misty. The weather was better in London !

Apparently Liguria (North west) and Emilio Romagna (North east) where there are lots of bike hotels are supposed to be more reliable areas weatherwise, though I'll think carefully before risking Italy a third year running for a training camp !

In my experience the best guarantee for weather is in mainland Spain - probably down the East side south of Barcelona in places like Alicante, Valencia, Murcia, and parts of Andalucia, but not in the high mountain areas like Sierra Nevada. In February/March it's at least as hot as Mallorca, and you don't get the wind like at Lanzarote.

Haven't decided where I'll go - all I know is I'd like to get some good miles in, possibly before the Tour of Flanders, and I will most probably tie my trip in with a local cyclo-sportive event so I get the chance to mix it with some local riders and go to their haunts !

I would definitely like to go back to Majorca-but maybe a month later than last time as this might fit into my training regime.
Any one up for the beginning of March.?
