The Disagreeable Forum!

Postby Toks » Wed Jan 04, 2006 2:24 pm

What going ON? How is it that one of the biggest cycling clubs in the South East can't seem to keep its forum up and running. I'm not having a go at anyone in particular but I think some questions need to be asked.

1. Is a finance problem?
2. Are these phpbb people culpable?
3. Or is it just incompetence on 'our' behalf

Sorry to have a dig but its a bit frustrating! :(

It does have quite a poor reliability record which does not promote use.

I have found this a useful tool since being a member of the club.

Toks and Gav- i will bring this up at the committee meeting on monday night as i feel it is going wrong far too often, I am not an IT bod but this forum goes wrong every 2-3 weeks, much worse than any other one that i use.
I will try to investigate!

ive got forums running, never crash...theyre free.....fit for forum..never crashes!

Maybe the reason it crashes is due to too much content...this is therefore the webmasters job, start deleting uselss posts from me! maybe its time to stop image html....just have links.....

alternatively, like i said months ago! start up a reserve forum..i can do it for you tonight, it can have your fancy little addiscombe logo, its free, and, as a backup, its perfect!

[quote]it was a dns lookup problem - it wasnt just the forum it was anything on addiscombe.org

i dont know if the hosting company changed the ip addresses of the servers (which would take up to 24 hours to propogate) or just took the servers down

It really is as simple as that - ive made sure we have got enough space on here, weve got enough bandwidth everything - its all been down to the hosting company

we currently pay about 40 quid a year for hosting - that gives us the forums and the addiscombe website.

if someone can recommend another host that is reliable at that end of the market that we can afford (as opposed to hostplus) that also allows php on their servers then post it up here so we can look at changing. Even if its more money then the commitee can decide to go for it for the hopeful increased up time.

edit
in answer to the earlier question
1) - no its not a finance problem - the major downtime in november was finance related but our treasurer had sent the cheque off in plenty good time and the hosting company simply hadnt cashed it. (Hes got the proof!)
2)phpbb is a standard forum and weve kept it as vanilla as possible to keep it as simple to run as possible. Its just an open source program that we run on our hosts servers. If the hosts servers stall then our phpbb stalls (thats the way they all work)
3) haha! No not even that!
Thanks for taking the trouble to explain the situation Marco! Most of it went way over my head but thats not the point. Perhaps we need to use a new hosting company; but then again what do I know. Cheers once again dude

I can definitley recommend Host-It.co.uk . I use them for the Redhill CC site and for all the other sites I have built for my clients. Although their prices are a bit on the pricey side, they have excellent support services including an online instant chat service where you can talk out your problem with one of their technicians.

Cheers! I still think you're 'taking liberties' coming on 'our' club forum and shamelessly advertising your own club.

Hmmmm... I don't mean to come on here to poach members or anything. I found the forum on a link on a website and it wasn't password protected so I thought I would just have a look.

Just like Ian Munnery lives in Redhill and rides for Addiscombe, there are people in our club who live in Croydon/London who ride for us.

And I'm sorry for offending people like Toks who are protective over their forum. People from other Clubs have advertised stuff and posted on the Redhill CC forum before (including Rob), and I and other members from the Club don't have a problem with it, as we are friendly and sociable with other Clubs and welcome anybodys input (even if they are from other Clubs!). If you don't want 'outsiders' coming into the forum Toks, then I suggest that you put the suggestion forward to the committee at Addiscombe to password-protect the forum if you are that protective.

We have the Home Standard plan for £59.99 a year (excluding VAT) but we also have paid for DSN support, because we run database driven pages on the site.

I have absolutely no problem with people from other clubs posting on addiscombe's forum. I think it would be short sighted at best and at worst very un 'agreeable' not to let them do so. In fact, quite a few addiscombe cyclists are members of other clubs and in some cases openly so. However, considering this is a 'club forum' and not an 'open forum' (in the true sense of the word!) I just wonder why you couldn't post under your own name like the vast majority of people. Perhaps 'taking liberties' was a bit harsh I appologise. Nevertheless I still think its a bit cheeky :)
