Sean, if you want to know that, you should have paid more attention in geography lessons at school. Although we are at the same latitude as places that get very chilly in the winter, the gulf stream keeps us supplied with warm sea currents and air from the warmer southern climes and we therefore stay nice and toasty (well, relatively toasty). That's also where jellied eels come from, except they're not jellied until after they get here.
Might all change if the global climate change theories are right though.

Yeah I have never seen snow like that before - just crazy and really beautiful.

In NYC everyone is responsible for the stretch of pavement outside of their building, ie if someone falls and is injured on the ice you are sued not the city. So yesterday people were out fighting the snow and shovelling constantly, and the basketball court outside my flat was filled with dogs going crazy, toddlers falling over and vanishing and kids diving around.

Today it's so sunny and the melt has started, the flooding itself will be an issue in coming days. I do plan to ride another century or so this Thursday if the temp goes up.

One disadvantage of being The old'un is that I can remember the winter of 1947.
On the Isle of Wight it was measured in some parts at 17 feet.
In Yorkshire, several villages were cut off for more than a month, and food and coal was air-dropped in.

From another old'un. I remember that winter of 1947. I was born in Egypt and arrived in England in that winter and so it is ingrained into my memory.
