PTR/Training Group, Sat 22nd Club Run

Postby Toks » Fri Apr 21, 2006 10:29 am

Hi Guys, as you know i don't get out on too many club runs now that the racing season is in full swing. I wondered if anyone would be intersted in a Plan To Race/Training Group run tomorrow. Essentially it would be the club run with the dual carriageway included. Average speed depending on wind etc would be around 20/21mph in a group of about 10-16 guys and it'll last 90mins approximately. Or IOW till we get to the cafe.

I think it would be a good ride for those who want to step up their training for sportivs etc or who are planning to race. Perhaps Huw, Ajay, Ian (if he's not doing a hilly one) or Mark could also help out...So basically if you can ride a flat 10 in under 28mins and you can hold a wheel you'll be fine. Its not a training race so the fast boys (Matt, Tim, Marek and Co) may have to venture off on their own for extra fun. I'll see you all about 9.15am. Cheers Toks

Toks,

I would be up for that. Its the kind of run we have been doing recently anyway, but its good if its advertised advance, people know what they are getting into.

Ta,

Graham..

Cool, Graham glad to hear it!. I don't wanna step on anyone's toes. There's often this slightly embarassing moment when Monty asks who want to ride with the 19s/21 group. At least now you and I have mentioned it people can be prepare themselves psychologically. Sometimes on the return journey to CSS a few guys have said to me they wish they'd have given it a ,cause they were a little bit too comfortable in the 17s.

toks,

At the moment, I thiink that there are a few guys that want to try to jump from the old 19s group up to the 21s. I am in this group.

To date, there has not been a 21 ride this year and last years crop of riders look to have improved and now look like a 23/24 group. Its almost the case, that we need a 20/21 group as you have suggested and an extra all out race group, who just go out and kill each other.

On the whole, I am up for anything that pushes the pace without putting me in an early grave.

Ta,

Graham..

I'll give it a go just to see how I fair with my recent training, but I don't think I will be able to sustain that pace for the full 90 minutes ... there is only one way to find out though...

Good on you Phil! I think what puts people off is thinking that its your own personal time trial to the cafe. I promise you mate its easier than that. Your work period will be a lot less and you'll be sitting on wheels to recover.

Give it a go till the cafe/DC turn off point and see how you feel. Riding fast raises your threshold level in much the same way hills do. However there is a slight difference in the muscle groups that get targetted. But on average a hill last 3/4mins. If you manage to hit 6 in a 3/4 hour social/17mph ride you've done 18mins to 24mins at threshold level.

Compare that with riding at or close to threshold for perhaps an hour or so. It cuts to the chase in a much shorter time. Ok no more lecturing. See ya tomorrow

Toks ! The Eagle of Merstham is flapping over from his North London nest on his annual migration. Toks is the man to create a racing flock to rival the London Dynamo! I will do my best to be there DS !

Great idea - I want to ride tomorrow but am a little time-impoverished, so this sounds perfect. Not in the best shape at the moment so not sure how I'll fare, but as Phil says, there's only one way to find out. See you there

..looks like I'm gonna miss this as well Toks....unfortunately theres footy on around 12ish, an being an Arsenal diehard couldn't miss the north London derby for nowt!

But its great to hear the above being organised, as it Def improves your threshold and pace considerably..I'm always up to giving it a go

Graham you're def ready for the 21's no probs...there has been a 21 group on occasions this year, but not always, an the group we were in 2 weeks ago hit 20.5mph on my clock...it jus depends on who turns out that day I suppose

i been out for 2 weeks unfortunately....so sluggish may be the optimum word to describe my fitness to date!

Would love to be there Toks but unfortunately I have a duty day planned in my sailing club so will be cycling 25 miles up the A22 to Forest Row. I'll try for a decent average on the 90 minute ride so will be with you in spirit and if up to it will come back via Crockham and Titsey - cheers

I just wanna say what a great ride that was today! There were about twelve of us; and essentially we did the club run (dual carriageway included) thru and off style. The group remained together throughout except for when Paul, Jim and Graham tested their legs on the little climbs just before Reigate. Myself, Ajay and Huw policed the bunch and made sure everyone stayed together and didn't get dropped.

Every twenty mins or so we eased the pace for a couple of mins so that some of the guys could recover at club run pace. Robbie battled galantly and managed to stay with us for half of the ride which was quite impressive. I'm sure part of the reason we had the number of guys that we did was because Robbie was in the group... So once again hats off to everyone who joined in. People beware, the following riders were looking scarily strong: Graham O, Nigel, Paul, Jim the TT man, Jess (American Guy), Matt and Adrian

Great fun this morning. Nice to stir things up a bit and spread the work around.
Left the cafe with Graeme, Paul, Sylv and some Irish guy. Don't know who the Irish guy was. He had a dangly lock hanging off his saddle but rode like Sean bloody Kelly. Took in Ranmore, Leith, Abinger and Box just to prolong the pain a bit more. Definitely felt the Col de Marlpit Lane up from Coulsdon when we got back.
All in all a good morning training.
No pain - no gain.

Jim
