Beastway Addiscombe promotion - volunteers needed 12th July

Postby Dr Frigo » Fri May 12, 2006 4:04 pm

Hi all,

The Beastway Mountain Bike race series will be starting in less than two weeks on Wednesday evenings at the Eastway racing circuit in North London, and as it has done (successfully) in the past years Addiscombe is set to promote one of the rounds, scheduled for Wednesday 12th July.

We will be needing upwards of 12 volunteers, to handle the duties of marshalling and lapscoring, so I am appealing to your good will and dedication to all things cycling! For this we will have to be on site for 6.30-6.45pm, with the first races starting at 7.30pm, and the last riders on the circuit at around 8.30-8.45pm (if a few people can stay afterwards for taking the course down that would be great too).

Also we are helping with building the course (ie tape and markers), from 3pm in the afternoon to around 5. We won't need as many people for this, a small handful should suffice, I will be there early with the usual French sticks and cheese, and I am told there will be cakes offered too.

The series itself should see some great competition between Addiscombe members, with strong riders on the road like Richard M, Kevin, Huw, Aodan, Grahame planning to join me (and others? Maria, Neil, Simon D, Elliott ... Toks ??). If you are racing for the series and helping out on that evening, you will be getting marshalling points which will be an average of your points for the other races.

There will be up to 180 riders racing altogether, ages ranging from juniors to grand vets, abilities from novices to experts, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. This is what makes Beastway great fun to watch, as well as the courses which are relatively short with varied terrain and difficulties, like a BMX jump field just near the start. Also this year will be the last ever to see races at Eastway, before it gets bulldozed for the Olympic development. The site has free parking facilities as well as a clubhouse with cheap tea and cakes.

Thanks in advance for your help, please let me know by email if you can make it, and if you have any questions,

Sylvain - mtb sec - sgarde@clsholdings.com

Sylvain, I usually marshall at this one, and find it a fun event to watch
and be involved in as the various riders hurtle or crawl round the course depending on their state of physical/mechanical (dis)repair.

On the 12th though, I will be on my way back to the UK, and won't be sure of my exact time of arrival in London. If I get back in time, I'll be there. But for the moment you'll have to put me down as a no. I'm sure the promotion will go well though, as in previous years.

I'll be there to build the course, and will be able to marshall if we are short of people. I would prefer to trundle round the course being the subject of supportive abuse this year though.

I think that I have already agreed to help with this Sylvain - will be riding over so if there is a group leaving E Croydon that would be good

Great - thanks guys. So far we have 8 people confirmed which is great - and I haven?t even contacted Joyce and Chris Watts yet. When it gets closer to the time of the event I will start canvassing if we don't have the 12 people required - so you might get to race Grahame, but expect the worse torrent of verbal abuse you have ever heard ;-)

I really can't wait for tonight now!

Great thanks Matt, I'll put you in as a "maybe".

Marshalling there is arguably more fun than for road races - there is a pretty much constant flow of riders, and in some spots it can be quite spectacular.

Alright, I have 8 people confirmed including myself, and 2 maybes.

This is great so far, we would need a good handful more to make the event run smoothly.

Just to remind those who have contacted me:

1 Sylvain
2 Huw marshall
3 Elliott marshall
4 Toks
5 Keith K
6 Grahame [3pm but racing if possible]
7 Alan
8 Paul T
9 Simon D [if not away on hols]
10 Matt R [95% sure he can]

I'm pretty sure I can help out.

Can do the "all day" thing as well.

I should be able to confirm at the very last minute...
