Track training day at Calshot velodrome

Postby kieran » Thu Nov 23, 2006 2:41 pm

Hi, in another thread I talked myself into trying to arrange one of these so I would be interested in seeing if anyone else was interested - I assume the more the cheaper it would be, so post below if interested and also if anyone has Paul T's contact details as I believe Paul T rarely accesses the net? Depending on Paul's feedback either I will let Paul handle things (I don't wish to thread on anyones turf) or I'll give it a go, can't be much harder than organising a child's birthday party or secret santa at work?

Anyway once I see the level of interest I'll then take things further. I would imagine a session at the weekend, for myself a Saturday would be best but would people be willing to skip a club run, do people only get one day in the weekend for cycling, like myself?

from the FAQs see below some important points regarding the track bikes:
I believe they have track bikes for hire.

Q: What do I need to bring with me to ride the track? For example, any special clothing (helmet?), are there rules about my bike and so on? Length of cranks, tyres, etc.
Sue: Requirements for the track; 165 cranks or 170 with a Manchester Spec Bottom Bracket (Higher than a normal track frame). Tyres with a file pattern on are required (no slicks). Maximum gear for the track is 84, but most find 81 easier.
What sort of clothing will I need on top of my racing kit?
Sue: A rider will need to ensure that they bring layers of warm clothing, as it gets cold between events during the racing. A chair, as seating in the centre is limited and it isn’t advisable to sit on the floor when it’ cold in there.

Q: Can I ride a road bike on it?
Sue: Road Bikes cannot be ridden on this track.

Q: Is there somewhere to shower and change at the velodrome?
Sue: Yes there are showers available in the same hanger

Q: Can I bring food and drink with me into the track centre?
Sue: Yes you can. ALso note that there are machines with cold drinks and snacks by the bar which serves hot meals and drinks.

I'm "might fancy a go". I'm definitely interested but timing can be a bit difficult.

I should be up for this. And as the folks still live in Southampton, I'm sure I could persuade my mum to bake a cake.

Go on Elliot I know you want to, I've seen you down at Herne Hill. Anyway I'm thinking of Jan/Feb time as Christmas is coming so a good goal to set youself to burn off all the Christmas excess

Anyway I'm sure you only have to do as much as you want the coaches won't force you to keep going and the great thing it you can't get dropped and left behind.

Well, I emailed Calshot and apart from prices etc one thing to note was:

[quote]Our track is very busy throughout the winter session and apart from a few 1.5 hr sessions we don't have availability until March.

So if it takes place it will be a while away yet, when does HH get back in operation after the winter :?:

No set date because it depends on track conditions. They try to get people on as soon as possible in March. The AGM is on monday so I'll know more after that.

Newport is about 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic (and traffic policemen  )

And when I get to Newport, it's so tempting to keep going for the extra 1/2 hour or so to Afan.

Track Day

Postby Kasper » Fri Nov 24, 2006 8:53 pm

There is an interview with Rob Hayles Multi World Champs Medallist on the track in this months Cycling Plus Magazine.
Sort of like a beginners guide piece which describes the track as somewhere "all top pro road racers have either already learned or continue to develop skills on the track.
So get out and give the track a whirl..."
Sounds like good advice to me and something which would be made all the better if a group from the club all goes together.  :)
