Paul Tunnell will be running a Speed Judging competition tomorrow (25th Nov.)

Q&A:

Q) What is speed judging?
A) Your ride a small circuit at your own pace. You estimate before how long you think it will take you. The closest to their estimated time wins.

Q) Race? Computers?
A) No and No. You can ride at any pace you like (10mph or 20mph it's up to you) the winner is not the fastest (could be the slowest), but the closest to their estimated time. Computers, watches, HRM to be removed. No timing device allowed, that would be cheating and we're too honest for that.

Q) How far?
A) Approx 3 1/2 miles (eg. 12mins = 18mph ave.), all left turns. Map available if needed.

Q) Flat?
A) No, has a stiff climb and a steep descent.

Q) Cost?
A) £2, to be shared out in prizes.

Q) Where?
A) Start and finish outside the cafe in Charlwood.

Q) Who can enter?
A) Any club member.

Q) If it's raining?
A) You get wet.

Should be good and anyone can win. Bonus side effect of staggering the queue at the cafe.

This was a good fun club event with about 10 of us having a go.

I was off first and tried to judge my pace as best I could, but a combination of the climb up the hill, the strong wind along the top, and the drop back made it trickier than it would seem. Thought I was doing okay and came back missing my estimate by 28seconds, not great but okay. A few more came in and nobody had nudged me from top spot yet . Alarmingly I had spotted Kasper and John C going up the hill you were meant to go down .

Then Stuart arrived proving not only do his legs move quickly, they also move metronomically as he was only a staggering 3 seconds out from his estimated time .

Top 3 were Stu @ 3secs, me @ 28secs, and Nigel @ 34secs.

Comedy was provided in ascending order by (remember it was a simple 3 1/2 mile loop of left turns):

John C - had gone the wrong way round the course, and I think got a bit lost, who managed to miss his time by 5 minutes!

Kasper - had also gone the wrong way round, and forgotten to turn at the top of the hill so carried on for a bit of a tour. Missed his time by 15 minutes!

Paul D - Won the booby prize. Was 2nd off and last back. Paul did start going the right way but forgot to turn left at the top of Norwood Hill and carried on all the way to Leigh! Eventually made it back from his audax ride missing his time by 17 minutes!

These 3 all got absolutely soaked as the sky fell in while they were still out, we were sheltering back in the cafe wondering if a search party was needed. Top work fellas for making it back eventually after your little adventures.

A big thank you to Paul Tunnell for organising this, and Grahame for assisting in timekeeping. An enjoyable no stress event.

Definatelty ACC's idiot of the week. Must have have been a mixture of enthusiasm and youthful(ish) exuberance that carried me over the climb and into the decent. Im sure Paul in his pre ride debriefing mentioned a decent somewhere, so I though this must be it, although when I got to Leigh I began to suspect that I'd gone somewhat off piste as it were and realised that taking at least the odd glance at road sighs wouldnt be such a bad idea. Anyway a grueling climb back up into a strong headwind..... Possible after cafe event for the future - Leigh to Charlwood; a sort of short TT hill climby sort of thing.

Paul T's report:
I decided recently that it would be a good idea to revive the ancient art of "Speed Judging" to add another dimension to the club run.

Based on the café, riders were set off at 1 minute intervals around an anti-clockwise circuit (left turns) around Norwood Hill. The circuit was approximately 3.5 miles and each rider had to estimate the time it would take them to complete the circuit.

Despite the slightly inclement weather, 10 club members wanted to take this on.

Estimates varied from 13:15 to 19:57.

Andrew green was first back and in a time only 28 seconds different to his estimate which almost stood up as the best right till the last rider, Stuart Chamberlayne who was press-ganged into riding at the last minute, with an excellently judged ride only 3 seconds outside his estimate (must go a bit faster next time!). Nigel Williams ran Andrew close, taking 3rd place with a difference of 34 seconds.

Unfortunately, because Paul Dewis had to remove his GPS Sat Nav, he took a wrong turning and went round twice just to make sure he had covered all the roads!!!! Kasper Seward decided he preferred right turns and went on a mystery tour arriving back at the café completely soaked but in good spirits.

Well done to all of you that took part in this enjoyable social event, and thank you for your support.

I will repeat this on a different circuit if you, the members want me to.....

The next event will be a "freewheel" competition - watch this space.
