cheapo MTB wheels

Postby kieran » Thu Jan 18, 2007 5:21 pm

Anyone got cheapo but true MTB wheels with unworn V brake rims for sale? I'm thinking about selling my old MTB and may sell it easier as a going concern instead of breaking it up but I need to replace wheels as current ones have well worn rims.

My plans are to go from (on the cheap of course):

MTB bike
audax bike
track bike

to

cyclo X bike
race bike
track bike

where the cyclo X bike will do as a winter/commute/off road bike and may see some limited action as a cross bike

Before you get rid of too much stuff, it might be worthwhile considering the amount of wheels you have. If you intend to use the cross bike for commuting and cross it's useful to have seperate wheels, one with slicks and one with knobblies. This will save you changing tyres every week or wearing out knobblies on tarmac. This means both wheels have to have the same no. of gears though.

One possible combination would be :
cross wheels
commuting /winter training wheels
race wheels
and possibly spare set of cross wheels (in case of punctures)

All interchangeable with identical number of gears. As far as I know you can use a 9 speed wheel for 10 speed but you will need a new 10 speed cassette.

PS I don't have any spare MTB wheels, I well and truly wear them out before I stop using them.

my "plan" is to have 3 wheel sets:

My current ones for training/commuting
My recently ordered cheapo ones from planet X sale for racing on (Reynolds alta race wheelset - NOT with the dodgy spokes £135!!!)

and the ones that will come with the 2nd hand cross bike I hope to buy.
