No VAT on bikes and spares.

Saw this and the penny pinching side of me liked it. More seriously the chap has a fair point, why should you pay tax on a carbon reducing mode of transport. They are trying to get people in more environmentally friendly cars with tax inducements, but they still aren't as green as your good old bike and little incentive is given.
[quote]For reasons of health and in order to reduce carbon emissions from transport, the Government should take a bold and tangible step to support the view that cycling is good for those who do it and good for everyone else as well. Cyclists should be rewarded for their contribution to reducing carbon emissions by not having to pay VAT for their bicycles, tricycles and human powered vehicles, nor for the spares and parts required to keep them running.

Apparently (and correct me if I'm wrong) but bikes also get bumped up by 14% as luxury (i.e. non essential) goods.

Thanks Andrew, good stuff.

If nothing else it gets the ball rolling on a green issue ... tax breaks for something that makes sense.
