Shoulder issues...

Postby -Adam- » Mon Jun 04, 2007 1:37 pm

Finally got to see my GP today about my injuries.

Knee is fine, which is nice. However...

My shoulder is not to good, Gp reckons on Ligamental damage to the front of the joint which could either:

a. heal naturally over time

or

b. require corrective surgery

So he's refering me to a specialist to deal with it at Ashtead hospital. Dr Danny Mocker (im convinced he's just going to take the piss out of me!) who will probably send me for more scans before deciding on the best course of action. Initial x-rays show bones are intact but they obviously don't show up much in the way of muscle and ligament damage...

So the advice at the moment is to keep it active, but not to strain it. Great.

Anyway, ill keep you posted...

Take it careful Adam - it will be terribly frustrating to ease back, but there are many more races to come so don't rush things and let them heal.

..shoulder injuries are a pain, becuase you feel like you can carrying on riding, just because its not ur leg or knee or something........but word of advice take it this injury seriously.

I dislocated my shoulder after coming off 18 months ago, and I can still feel it now when out on the bike. I had physio, and the doc said complete full recovery, but i neglected the exercises and just got straight back on the bike. Its just more of an aching stiff feeling...

..maybe it'll come back to haunt me when its too late, who knows.

But good luck anyways mate, hope it don't show as being too serious

Bad luck, hope the recovery isn't too long, but don't rush and risk it.

Listan yo Yohan - I too injured my shoulder a year or so ago, didn't stick to the exercises and paid for it.
You need to maintain your core strength and thats what a lot of the physio does. Lose your core strength and it takes an age to get it back - but don't over do it either, you need to also let it heal.

Good luck mate

Adam,

Sorry to hear about the shoulder and hope the prognosis is better on visiting the specialist.

As I've just reached 3 months post breaking my shoulder I would echo the advice given by others, although note that I am by no means an expert.

The biggest concern the consultant raised with me was "the falling off scenario" on resuming my cycling on the road. The issue was not that I would break my shoulder again as the bone has healed quickly but the potential muscle or ligament damage caused by not having full range of movement in my shoulder at the time of a fall.

I've gone for the short term pain (doing physio, not being on the bike on the road and doing more turbos than I would really like) for long term gain (minimising LT impact of the injury).

All the best.

Five days since I hurt my shoulder riding into a tree, and the pain seems to be getting worse rather than better. I had a heavy rucksack this morning and it's made things even worse. Moving the arm around is quite painful.

As Yohan says I guess because it is not affecting my riding I have not been pressured into consulting a doctor, but I wonder if I should be now. But then they might say I should stop cycling! Might go to Metis.

Well, some of you will know that i was finally having my shoulder sorted over the weekend...

And sorted it is. Apparently. Though it is pretty painful still, the surgeon said the op went v well. After removing some scar tissue, he drilled through the collar bone to thread some [shimano] titanum wire through, which was then threaded through a [shimano] titanium button. Then at the other end a second titanium button was placed to receive the wire at the shoulder blade. So my shoulder joint is now being suspended by the [shimano] titanium componentry. Which should in turn allow the ligament betwwen the two to heal.

Shoulder is feeling very stiff atm, and constantly aches. Also the rest of the arm is dead as its being held in an immobilising sling, which looks like a straight jacket! Ah well, c'est la vie ay. Off work at the moment so just lazing around doing not very much, which is kinda good as i feel like i havn't stopped moving since the june! and i rode about 750miles in the last two weeks before my op so i guess its a good thing to have a break. Gotta say though my shoulder has improvrd a lot today alone so im looking on the bright side. The physio said ill be good to 'ride around the block' after about 3/4weeks, when i can ditch the sling. then ill see the surgeon again towards the end of september who will hopefully give me the official ok. After that it will be physio for a few more months. With the shoulder regaining full strength after about 6 months.

The biggest problem i have is the one handed syndrome. Its unbelievable how much one takes two arms for granted. Im right handed and i cant use my right arm. sh1t me it makes everything a chore! Brushing your teeth, typing, eating dinner... the list is endless. you don't wanna know how long its took me to write this post!

Anyway, good to see everyone had a good ride to Brighton at the weekend. I think i dreamt about it while they were operating  But fear not, when my shoulders back, ill be on the war path, well come march...

Hi Adam. Good to see the op went well. Were the nurses nice? I’m sure they were very accommodating…..

You have my sympathies - one handed stuff is an absolute chore. After my stack last year, I couldn’t use my right arm for several weeks due to tendon inflammation in my shoulder and my broken clavicle. By the time I had managed to clear-up after lunch it was time to start making dinner. Also, I wasn’t allowed to get various dressings on my face and body wet. I never managed to work out how to wash my hair left handed keeping the dressings dry....

I’d settle-down in front of the telly, make the most of a compulsory rest and try to get as much symapathy as possible from family and friends. We'll have ample opportunity to take the mickey when you start your comeback and are even slower than normal.
