Hey Sean, have you considered something a bit more fancy such as a GPS based cycling computer. Before you assume they are too expensive, they have come down quite a bit in price ... Considering the features, £180 is not bad compared to some of the Polar offerings ... and for an extra £35 you can add a cadence sensor. You will be able to spend hours analysing your rides and races, plotting them on Google maps/earth, along with your speed, HR, cadence, altitude, etc ... just a thought.
