Commuting tyre part 2

Postby Paul on the Pearson » Wed Oct 17, 2007 3:32 pm

Ok so I got some armadillos this morning, admitedly I can be a little mechanically challenged as it were, but should it take the best part of an hour and a broken tyre lever and a lot of bad lanuage to get the dam things on the rim? Things? That should be thing without the "s". Ive still got to get the other one on. Any advice? I know your not meant to use tyre levers to get the tyre on but I cant see how else you could do it.

Paul,
Some tyre/wheel combinations can be very tight and it is not easy to tell.

Are you coming along tonight? I can usually get most tyres on, and show you how.

Stretch the tyre a bit, new tyres are always a bit stiffer than when they've been inflated a few times. Try using a lubricant like a bit of washing up liquid on the bead to get it on for the first time.

you could try my approach. Swear like billy o at the offending piece of rubber. Get drunk and then put it on there. Works for me every time.

put some wax or lube on the bead of the tyre just as you're about to do the last bid. Should slide on easily.

Thanks for that. I managed to get it on eventually, I was probably trying to lever too much tyre on at once, more speed less haste, but hopefully if I ever need to do it again it would have stretched a bit. Unfortunately I have to work tonight so wont be at the Beer Circus, see you sat.

You should NEVER use tyre levers to put a tyre on

(unless you have the natty special levers that Amy has - perhaps they are what you need - Amy could you post details?)

because you are in danger of pinching the tube.
