Update - saw Eddie in Mayday last night and he was very poorly with an aneurism and the consultant suggested his chances of survival are no better than 50/50 and he was rushed (with blues) to St George's Tooting for an emergency operation.

This is awful news I was chatting to Eddie on Tuesday night when he was as cheerful as ever giving me some advice about ridng a 24 hour event.

For those that don't know he was one of the Great Addiscombe long distance riders, national record holder and national champion. He was telling me on Tuesday how the Adiscombe set the national 24-hour team record with riders finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the national championship. They put such a large chunk on the previous record that they were accused by the previous record holders of "ruining" 24-hour racing. That was in the days when long distance riding was taken very seriously.

He was a stalwart of the club helping out whenever and wherever he could.

Perhaps more importantly he had served as a submariner enduring conditions and risks that most of us could never imagine.

This is a very sad loss.

ive heard a lot about eddie from others in the club, and last night was the first time i met him. very sad indeed.

He was such a kind & thoughtful man. He took the trouble to phone me the day before the 12hr to give me some top tips on how to enjoy it. He knew exactly how I was feeling and really made a huge difference to my mindset for the event.

He was so modest about his own achievements too...although I think quite proud to have been a submariner and still very much involved with his old unit.

I am thankful that he went quickly. There really was no indication he was unwell before he collapsed. Just 20 minutes earlier he'd been telling me about the engravers he uses for the trophies and how they're all cyclists which makes it so much easier as you don't have to convince them that it's possible to ride 50 miles in under 2hrs (apparently other engravers have thought the times were typos )

I'm really gonna miss him.
